That might work if it's held by the steadiest hand imaginable, bringing that spinning abrasive wheel upon the only the topmost poriton of the staple but what about the parts of the staple, the 99% of it that are in very close proximity to the paper surrounding it, the parts of the staple imbedded right against and depressed into the paper? Leave the rust there, or remove it and part of the top layer of paper, if not the paper itself with the 1000 rpm abrasive wheel?

IMO< removing oxidation, from a light gray layer to rustwithout removing staples is surgery, not carpentry.

    You obviously don't recognize sarcasm

Long story short, as a newbie at grading, I submitted a book that could have used a clean & press, but I didn't know anything about that then, and got a 9.6. I've since learned more and that there are "pressable defects" that can be eliminated with a clean and press.

I have a 9.6 Secret Wars SS Shooter, Beaty, Zeck. The grader notes say:

Does "spine stress lines" mean breaking color or just detectable by finger? The edge of the comic is off-white and looking the comic through the slab, I personally can't see any breaking color lines.

The current difference between a 9.6 and 9.8 is roughly $500.

Would it make sense for me to have the slab cracked, have it cleaned and pressed, and then re-submitted in the attempt to get a 9.8?

    Many Thanks!

Hi folks.  I decided to prettify this 50.  On here it had scored a 3.0 to 3.5 in its raw state so I'd like to know what you think it now looks visually.  Bear in mind ofc that when tilted to the light you can see where the creases were.  Im going to repair the bottom right corner too.

How do you all feel about restoration on a comic in low grade..?  Once it gets down to 3.5 I'm all for it - I can't see the point of very tatty looking comics.

I would never try to restore any comic, keep it original.....if you want to tape it, color it, fold it, bend it, eat it, it's your comic.....

You want the buyer to come to you, inspect the books and transport them home. All at their expense, yes? As well as bring the big book with them so you have zero transportation expenses.  You also expect them to check for restoration and count all the pages of every book.

I don't think you have bad intentions but this doesn't seem very well thought out. What are the chances a collector is looking for
DD 1-163 unslabbed and has a spare key to trade? They may list for more, but mid-grade Silver Age Daredevils are slow movers that most dealers already have a surplus of.

As I said, I'm not looking for an overall grade but am specifically interested in the particular corner flaws mentioned. It's a very simple question and requires less effort than an overall grading assessment.

I don't have the book on me to scan. Only have these pictures.

Mods feel free to delete the thread if it's such a problem.

It’s definitely a very tiny imperfection on the bottom left corner of the comic, does that count as color loss? That would probably bump it down to a 9.6 right there then right? Smh. It doesn’t look like color loss to me but I could be wrong. I could post more photos.

That alone takes it out of 9.8

I have considered the various suggestions and proposals people here have put forth (getting the comics graded, consigning etc). The main reason I don't want to use a place like mycomicshop or send books out to be graded and or cleaned and pressed is because I am too nervous about the risk of damage/loss during shipping and the difficulty in trying to collect on an insurance claim if something were to go wrong during shipping on books I bought 40 years ago. Anyway, long story short I have zero interest in shipping any books anywhere. I am looking for an in person transaction. I will provide a detailed inventory of my books and a collector with interest can come to my town, inspect everything in person, come up with their valuation and then we can negotiate on a CGC graded comic to trade for the whole collection or cash if they have it. I'd rather deal with a real collector than a consignment site. I just wanted to know where the proper place on this site to list such a proposed transaction would be. Thanks for the advice everyone.

You'll have a hard time trading raw comics for graded comics even up value....

I am interested in trading my entire RAW collection which includes some really high $ books from silver and bronze ages and some good Marvel runs(about 1250 total comic books) for 1 or several high value CGC graded books. Where would I list this on this site so I don't break any rules while allowing the most potentially interested people to see what I'm offering?

Question....why not just get your "really high $ books" graded?

I have, for some reason, ThunderCats issues 1-3 from 1985. They're still sealed in the plastic that they came in. I was wondering if sealed comics can be graded, and if not, is it better for value to leave them in the packaging or to open them and send off for grading? Noob inquiry I know. Thank you!

    I would keep them sealed...they are so cool.....unless, obviously, they're 9.8

the OP knew some information: knew enough to buy a Silver Surfer #3. Now they know about reprints, grading, value, Ebay sold for valuation/pricing and so much more. These boards are great! And if you can't take a gentle ribbing an internet forum is no place for you.

    Agreed

I've noticed the same thing. These boards are a great community but could be even better if there was a little more humility. The IG comic community has a much closer knit "family" feel to it. Nothing wrong with a little joking around but some people just go overboard. Hope OP comes back.

He won't....his dreams of cashing in on this ultra rare expensive comic have been dashed.....

Thanks to everyone for the helpful feedback!

Forgive me for another question as I try to wrap my head around this... but what's the relationship between a comics valuation and its desirability?  Just because this comic might have a book value of $5000 (or pick any value you choose), does that mean I'll find a buyer at that price with some of the best parts missing (title, issue number, date, publisher)?  I ask because I'm hesitant to spend $200+ to rate a comic that no one wants.  I'm sure I can find a much more affordable way to protect and preserve it.

Well, a .5 with a full cover, just sold for $4000.00+......with a full cover....imo yours would sell, but I think it's a tougher sale .....
