  1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maggie_Thompson Maggie and her husband were two of the great collectors and archivists of our hobby
  2. I have not be fortunate yet to get a signed one. i have tried to read it a couple of times, but I get nostalgia overload and find my mind just drifting, enjoying the art anecdotes etc. So good that Spurlock got him to put down his memoirs before it was too late.
  3. I think it is four, but the interest seems to be in the first two (this is the second)
  4. Thank you - my 242 is slabbed and the price of readers is nuts (my slab is basically a reader - would love a coverless)
  5. Yeah Broome is a huge influence on DC. All the Rogues. The Guardians, Sinestro, rebooting Star Sapphire, even Batman, but among his stuff I love the most are those unique sci-fi stories. I love 156. The reaction from Iris. The whole thing, and of course I don't think there has ever been a better scifi artist than CI. and almost time for Comics most famous Australian
  6. I am in Australia so don't know much about comics being sold on the ground (Flash was not distributed here until late 70's although we got the stories very soon after the US as they were printed under license), but I have however been to the last two Emerald City Cons. A couple of observations relating to Infantino's two runs. Last year I had a stack of issues that I wanted for the second run (296-350) for readers. I had no problem filling what I wanted (left three off my list though). Most dealers had some, prices reasonable, condition almost always 8.5+, I could have completed that entire run many times over. This year except for one dealer they had a couple. Maybe five sometimes three, but only one guy had any depth. Now for the silver age I was lucky to find a dealer who had more than five in the bins. I know many books under 130 maybe behind the counter, but 139 and 147 was on walls, 153 and 165, 155, 174, 140 were non existent. Most of the stock was 150 up and very seldom Rogues issues.(did find one copy of 150 at maybe G+) Did however pick up 127 with Grodd at around 7.0. Very happy with that. I think of all DC books only Batman (includes Detective) and Flash are the most collectable from the silver age followed by early Supes titles and JLA. That was just one Con, but interested in opinions.
  7. From memory this precedes Brainiac and the bottles city of Kandor
  8. That is a very nice copy. Yeah pre 1962 is very hard to find in grade. I saw the shootout on 114 (at around 9.4) a few months ago and was a little stunned. They are so rare they only publicly trade very infrequently. Thank you for sharing. I remember at ECCC last year quite a few Flash books on the wall but about the rarest one was a 114 in around 4.0-4.5. (I did get a great 129 at around 8.5 so was very happy, but stuff under 114, VERY RARE in grade. Thanks again.
  9. I know you know that it was 110 - at least when you read it. WW had three appearances and only one cover although it was one of CI's great Rogues covers. Been a standout Rogue since Johns took over but he was "B" Rogue in the day. I always loved his outfit, riding on top of clouds - young kids today don't know what they are missing ..
  10. I really appreciate those collectors who share those amazing high grade books, but I also love collectors sharing those books that were well loved (and well read) in other ways. That book had brought a lot of fun to a lot of people.
  11. He was a major part of 155. It was he who brought them all together for the first time. Until then from the original six only Cold and Heatwave had worked together although they all knew of each other .. and of course all used the same tailor. After being used like that the Rogues in Flash comics kept their distance although Cold and Mirror Master were aligned with Grodd in the 70's Secret Society of Super Villains. .. and yes, I am slightly obsessed with the Rogues.
  12. Yep, much better, and considering Julie loved those Gorilla covers and Carmine drew primates so well, I wonder why they went the soft general interest route. Only two Grodd covers in the silver age and I don't think either are CI's best work.
  13. I have not looked there but GPA has a 9.2 sale and last year a 9.0 cracked $14,006. Kind of why it makes OPG top 50 each year. Is it the low number, 6th appearance, is it Piper's appearance and cover .......or is it Grodd
  14. It is scarce in high grade. I think anything 6.0 and over would be considered scarce. I remember someone commenting on these boards (not this thread) about it being on the OPG top 50 once. I also remember being a little shocked at what GPA has for it at the top grades.DC silver age prior to 1962 is very hard to find in high grade. Back in the old days OPG and dealers looked at comics with major defects as non comics was not interested and ignored them (unless golden age of course).
  15. It is funny how Grodd is such an integral part of DC and he did not score a cover in his first three appearances - maybe after all those great gorilla covers Julie had artists draw (Infantino) in his 50s Sci-Fi comics he may have thought it sent readers the wrong message.
  16. Thanks, I am a Flash fan, not a comic collector, just a guy who got old and after mortgage, kids, and saving for retirement worked a few more years to do some stuff he wished he had done long ago. I think I am done now, but I have said that before. Barry and Iris hold a very special place in my heart, so glad DC brought them back. Favourite issues are 147, 156, 155 & 174. 156 is not on most people's lists like the others but love the story.
  17. If this is the fun with 105 we are having I can't wait for 114, 123, 129,137,139 .... going to be a real fun next few months
  18. and if we are still on 105, the other copy that I just "had to have" - I think I am cured now, although I have said that before (i will never buy another book !!!), the signature hurts it, but I still love the copy.
  19. Before we run out of page - my first slabbed book. At the time I thought, don't do it you know what will happen - but yep it started me jumping back into collecting after swearing away from it 25 years ago after a nasty dealer experience
  20. Here is the first story from 105 with the cover that was not used. This is not a reprint as such but printed under license in Australia a few months after the US release. .. and yes the other part of the story was printed here but I am still looking.. and Bomber love that 155 -
  21. Just wanted to let you guys know how much I am enjoying watching this thread. Schwartz, Broome, Bates Infantino and Co ( and a cast of many more) would have been very happy to see it. Thank you, and I will put some of mine up .. eventually. Can't wait till page 105, I will have to work out the photos by then..
  22. I think Broome did the back up story in SC 4 (classic Broome Sci Fi) and know he did Cold in SC 8. I actually think he created all the Rogues. Kanigher was basically still writing Golden Age stories. The Turtle is very Golden Age - the heaping or irony, the outwitting the villain rather than out powering him. Broome may be the second most important creative writer of the era after Kirby. He is certainly up there with Ditko and Lee. This is from memory, but I would be stunned to think Cold was not his. Anyway very nice book. I have always loved that cover and the Shade.
  23. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Showcase-4-CGC-1-8-Cream-To-Off-White-Pages-First-Silver-Age-Flash-DC-1956/263702073218?hash=item3d65de4f82:g:7ewAAOSwJdBbAise I am a noob when it comes to CGC (I like to read my books) but was looking at this and to my untrained eye that left boot and belt look like it has been colour touched. If so why no purple label. Does the colour touch have to go through to the other side, or when it gets that low it does not matter. Thanks
