The 1/1 Trout (and all chase cards) were produced to fuel pack/case gambling. It's an aritificially rare manufactured collectible and the price seems completely ludicrous to me.

The Charizard, on the other hand, was produced as part of a game meant for kids to actually use. Pokemon has spanned generations at this point, and the first group of kids to play with these are hitting their earning potential. The first set's value, while super high, has been fueled much more organically than the "black atomizer inverse refractor 1 of 1 bazooka gem mint polarizer card of Joey the Tubba professional bowling card" as my card-collecting dad put it.

I agree with this.  Pokémon is more legit/organic than those triple-reflector-gold-cards-with-a-jersey-piece-stuck--in.  I know nothing about Pokémon.  But I suspect kids knew to save and preserve them....so the price for 10.0 Charlizards seems way too high.

Like he shared in the article, Mark was writing that out at a stage where his mother was dealing with COVID. So I guess a more emotional state as he reflected on how Wonder Woman 1984's message impacted him.

But I guess you can also say his review sucked. It's a point. I guess.

    He's unhinged.

These critics are liars.  They'll say anything to make Wonder Woman seem great.

You mean the movie that the Chinese government was subsidizing the tickets which Deadline noted above?

Hollywood journalists and critics pump-out propaganda to boost Wonder Woman.  Marvel/Disney or whoever boosted Captain Marvel's numbers....theaters were empty, but the box-office numbers kept going up.  So no excuses.

  4. This is an extremely valid question.  I have a hunch that the newbie who asked this will hit BIG on a collectible investment or two in his lifetime.

I hit big twice over the last 15 years....I asked the exact same question on here 8 years ago....I put a temp & humidity sensor in my safety deposit box, shared the results...didn't get much feedback.  But some.  The best I can say is:

I think you're ok as long as the temp doesn't vary too much, and without unusual humidity.  I don't think 10 years of the temp rising to 80 for 2 hours per day in a safety deposit box will affect the comic.

Well, with the exclusion of both Supes 1 and Bat 1 combined with the inclusion of both Mystery Men 1 and Police Comics 1, it looks like you are definitely going with first appearances all the way.  hm

Although most longer term collectors would have selected Wonder Comics 1 over Mystery Men 1, I actually agree with your selection of MM 1 since it was a much longer run than the 2-issue run of Wonder Comics before DC's lawsuit shut them down.  In addition, Blie Beetle is pretty much still around in the comics today some 80+ years after his first appearance in MM 1.  :applause:

I am also in total agreement with your selection of Police Comics 1 since I feel that this has long been a much under appreciated and hence, rather under valued GA key book that has been overlooked by most GA collectors.  Definitely hard to beat when its got the first appearance of Plastic Man and Phantom Lady.  Especially since Plastic Man is still around in comic book form to this day and also supposed to get his own movie in the not too distant future.  Although the Police Comics version of Phanton Lady is definitely not as readily recognizable as the classic Baker GGA sultry cover version which came in the latter part of the 40's, she's another character who has morphed through various alter egos over the decades to still be around in one form or another.  :luhv:

The one that I would disagree with is All-American 19 since the Atom is a relatively minor and 3rd tier character from my point of view and we already have far too many DC characters on this list here.  Plus I just wanted to make room for Amazing Man 5 since I consider that to be the flagship and key book for the highly desirable and HTF Centaur line.  :takeit:

As for your Tier 2 selection of the Flash/Thrill Ashcan, I would take that off my list since I personally don't think ashcans should be included in these kinds of list.  In its place, I would definitely put in Pep 22 into Tier 2 since it is a first appearance of a major comic book character (i.e. Archie and his gang) who has basically run uninterrupted in a slew of comic book titles for some 80 odd years now.  :cloud9:

Yes, Batman 1 needs to be added to my Tier 2.  The Joker is about equal to any superhero other than Superman and Batman.  Like I said, fans could argue all day about who's better....Joker vs Aquaman, Captain America vs Flash, Green Lantern vs Wonder Woman....I just put them all in Tier 2.

I guess I have to make just one exception for my 1st-appearance rule for Superman 1.

Pep 22....yes Archie is the one non-superhero that deserves to be ranked.  But I can't rank him as high as Robin.  I'll put him in Tier 4.

  7. Tier 1

    Action 1

    Detective 27

    Tier 2

    All-American 16

    All Star 8

    Batman 1

    Captain America 1

    Flash 1

    Flash/Thrill Ashcan 1

    More Fun 73

    Motion Picture Funnies Weekly 1

    Tier 3

    Detective 38

    Marvel 1

    Whiz 2(1)

    Tier 4

    All-American 19

    More Fun 52

    Mystery Men 1

    New York World's Fair 1939

    Pep 22

    Police 1

    Superman 1

First appearances of major characters is what should matter....and what will matter in the future.  Stories, artwork, etc. shouldn't matter.  Arguing about which character is cooler at the moment shouldn't matter much.  Rarity is a factor.  Cameo appearances could be a factor (for More Fun 52 and All-American 19).

  8. ...I like to give strong opinions.  Say what's right and what's wrong.  Call out bias when I see it.  And we comic collecters are the most biased people on the planet LOL.

But I like to give newbies good real advice.

But...I like to puff my 2 books I own too...I mean I'm friendly and honest and it would be for fun.  But...usually we are so secretive.

Would it destroy the mystique of a great comic if a ham-&-egger like me blabbed about owning it?

This movie would never get "critically acclaimed on Rotten Tomatoes, its awfulllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll  :)

Yeah.  Uneven pacing.  Scenes missing.  No new ground covered.  But the female Captain Marvel....this is the hero we need.  Shazam too....light-hearted fun and a big box-office success.

  10. Very excellent question, Chicago Boy.  You are causing me to chime-in, which I rarely do.  Although I remember you my last time, maybe 8 months ago...???...giving such a wrong opinion - in opposition to More Fun #73.  I mean seriously...this board is great for everything...except investing advice.  Young newbie Golden Age collectors...you are in the right place, you have the right idea...but don't listen to all the wrong advice/opinions here.

As for the headline question....What % of Action 1 and Tech 27 have been re-submitted to CGC ?  The answer is....ALL OF THEM.  Everyone in the comic business rips open all their slabs and has the books pressed (ironed) and re-slabbed.  Before every auction, dealers enter the office and look at every comic under a microscope and determine how much each one will press/iron up.

But fret not, newbies.  Me...I own 2 great Edgar Church's...so no worries.  And I have advice for you...later.........

  11. A lot of people here refer to RottenTomatoes and IMDB scores as if they are facts.  They say things like "critically acclaimed" or "audiences loved it"....as if RT and IMDB scores are real facts.  They are not.  Yes the scores should be reported, but they are not real facts.

Critics rate based on political/social issues....NOT on if a movie is good or not.  It's common-sense.  Everything else in the news is political; there's no such thing as straight reporting.  You can tell by which movies get good reviews and which get bad reviews.  You can tell by the wording of their reviews.  They're very sneaky about it, but it's still obvious.  For instance, to downgrade a good movie....they flat-out lie, they focus on irrelevant things, and they use terms like "uneven pacing".  So obvious.

IMDB is Fake News too.  Why wouldn't it be?  They're no different.  They flat-out say their scoring-system is secret and not simply incoming numbers; they admit they manipulate.  They can do whatever they want.  They eliminated their Message Board, because they don't want differing/real opinions.
