    Operation Peril # 9 - eBay purchase

Typhoon Tyler by Ogden Whitney Page -

As always, an intriguing glimpse into a title that I probably wouldn't investigate without a guide. Thanks, B'wana Michaël!

Interesting to see the borderless panels. I've read that those were mostly found at Dell/Gold Key because of their better printing facilities. Is that a myth, or did ACG also have access to higher quality presses and better craftsmen?

New Funnies # 181 - Bought from eBay

Probably for about $1. Nobody loves the Lantz books!

    Another fantastic write-up!

Except for a single 1946 story drawn by Walt Kelly, creator of Pogo...

AWP!! Where did the Kelly story appear?

    Oswald Splash -

I like the art on the Oswald story better than the rest. No ideas about the artist?

    Thanks! An interesting read.

  3. Certainly this was Goodman and the gang jumping on the military comedy/Sgt. Bilko bandwagon. I'm the world's worst art spotter, but does this cover (credited to Severin when it was posted) look a lot like Mort Drucker? Were their comedy styles similar?

    Jack

Not quite the GGA thats been posted but this #1 Atlas is more Teen Humor than Military. Kind of an esoteric find.

I like it - Barker was obviously inspired by Sgt. Bilko and looks like Stan Lee.

  4. I have no idea what a "sepulchre" is, but assuming it's an environmentally friendly holder, archivally safe providing encapsulation which offers protection from airborne polutants and moisture, coupled with a clear plastic front and back for viewing, addtionally containing info that confirms a condition grade and restoration check summary by nationally recognized experts on the subject......

Well, that's close -- except for the plastic front and back. There is a condition check of sorts before a sepulchre is used.

I wouldn't have it any other way for the 2nd highest graded copy of Reform School Girl! cool.gif

Don't mind me. I'm just jealous.

  5. Nothin' but a photograph and a bunch of text boxes on the cover. Are you sure that's a comic book?

    ...

...not exactly a recent purchase ( bought last year ), but I thought you guys would appreciate this...............

    ...

Even if it's not a comic book, I sure don't mind looking at the cover! popcorn.gif

That's all you're going to be able to look at, with the book trapped in that plastic sepulchre!

  6. Next 3 are all Bowling Green Peds, one of the Caps has a tiny chip out but the rest of the book is a beaut

Which Bowling Green does that pedigree collection hail from? I wouldn't be surprised if there was a city by that name in every state. (I've only been to the ones in OH and KY)

  7. here in manhattan 10-15 years ago there used to be a lot of guys setting up shop on the sidewalk with a table and some boxes and selling comics. now it's far less frequent. picked these up today for $10 total, all baged and boarded:...

Man, that sounds like heaven!!! I would love to find stuff like that at that prices, right on the street!!!

    Shep

Or right in someone's apartment, where the sellers may have "found" them!

  8. Is there any reason to read this series? Is there a worthwhile story, or pure hucksterism? I read Crisis on Infinite Earths a few years ago not long after rediscovering comic books, and while it was confusing at times -- because storytelling was secondary to the artwork and DC's cleanup agenda, and because of my 1970 to 1995 "gap" -- it was worth the time. I've heard conflicting views on Secret Wars and obviously there are some fans here. With 2 to 4 copies of each issue, mostly from cheapo bins, I might as well dig them out and take a look.

  9. Thanks! I'm not used to these types of boards so I think I replied to a post from over a year ago without mentioning what I was replying to.

    Doc V.

Good to read your words of wisdom here, Doc!

Be sure to stop over at the Obadiah Oldbuck thread to let everyone know what is and isn't a comic book -- some of those Miss America issues, for example.

The reader can figure out what you're replying to by clicking on the link in the "Re" line -- e.g., the name "Scrooge" in the first reply you sent:

It's also a Roy Lichtenstein source, if you care about that sort of thing. I wish I had my copy to check which panel. (the joy of not caring about high-grade. $5 for about fine-)

In case you haven't seen it, there's a great website that breaks down some of Lichtenstein's sources.

And this one as well (linked to the site you posted).

    Image Duplicator

I found in some notes that the painting adapted from OFF 71 is probably " Takka Takka "

Can you find the panel in OFF 71?

Did you read the tale of Graham Bader, the unscrupulous author who duped Barsalou out of his find of the source of "Look Mickey", then published it without credit in the Oxford Art Journal?

    Sleazy plagiarist's article

Apparently the journal made Bader revise the article, because Barasalou is credited in footnote 22 in the on-line version!

I also have an undercopy of that book... $7 for FN.

    That's my kinda buy!

  11. My copy of Our Fighting Forces #71 just arrived!!! After missing out on a 9.2 copy on Heritage (at nearly 6x guide!) I was chuffed to get this one for a c-note. I'm snapping it out of the slab tonight.

The best greytone cover of all time, imho.

It's also a Roy Lichtenstein source, if you care about that sort of thing. I wish I had my copy to check which panel. (the joy of not caring about high-grade. $5 for about fine-)

    My Friend Irma # 16 - from 143ksk

ANOTHER GREAT WRITE-UP! Sorry, no comments yet on Mutt & Jeff yet either, but I haven't finished reading it. This week has been so busy that I've barely been able to keep up with the Endless Obadiah thread. Please don't be discouraged by the lack of feedback.

I have to say that the ten or so posted pages of Irma is about all I could take at one sitting. This sort of "dumb bunny" humor wears out its welcome very quickly for me. When my son was young, there was a popular kids' book series about Amelia Bedelia that was just like Irma -- constant misunderstanding of the simplest phrases. I never made it through reading a whole book to him before it went back into the pile for something less exasperating (often Tintin).

  13. ...

It looks like the very same girl with the same expression as the girl on the cover of SeanK's #8.

    #4 and #6 too.

Seriously, is she a continuing character or just Whitman's (right?) favorite model?

    ...

Thanks. There's no arguing with [great] taste!

  14. I made a post used the word D E M O C R A T which is an issue in Overstreet and indeed a title to a Platinum comic but when I hit the continue button the word is replaced by (embarrassing lack of self control) what is going on?

HAH! "Summa [embarrassing lack of self control] laude" was funny enough, but dem-you-know-what is filtered out as a cuss word?? How about [embarrassing lack of self control] (Repub-you-know-what)? But Nixon makes it through!

I have one, will have to dig it out to make scans, so it will not be real soon, but i will try to get to it when i can. Here is the scan used in Overstreet on page 366 up at the the top in the price index, larger size so you can read the cover. I also had to change my wording as i spell out DE..... in my Jpeg URL description

    Evolution-Demo.jpg

Interesting-looking book! It seems to cover some of the same ground as Thomas Nast. Is that Boss Tweed strummin' his harp? Maybe evolution and Darwinian should be filtered out too -- hot button issues!
