  1. Hey there, mister -- are you saying my funnybook looks like it's only worth a dime? Huh? I'll have you know that it cost me a whole 17¢!!!! just in case I don't really want to prolong the guessing game. I just thought it was a funny amount for a "scarce" Fiction House book over 55 years old. Jack (good guess)
  2. Nice books, Jack! (thumbs u Andy Thanks! Scrapin' the bottom of the barrel a bit, but I won't be afraid to read them. Jack
  3. I guess this qualifies. Black Magic 18, 1952, Simon and Kirby, complete reader copy. Jack
  4. I knew that looked familiar... Great catch, BH. I always enjoy seeing artistic sources such as that identified. Where could the publishers have come up with an inspiration for those witch and crystal ball images in the 1940s? Hmmm Jack
  5. I had to sacrifice for mine -- about the cost of a 12" Subway sandwich (at the current sale price). It was tough. Jack
  6. If that's the theme, I'll join in with these two Atlas war books (also posted in the SA war thread). Battle Ground 13 1956, classic Heath cover. Battlefront 47 1957, possible Kida cover according to the Atlas Tales site. I'm not complaining about the condition for under $2. Jack
  7. $4.99 plus $6.00 shipping. Bonus points: It was advertised on eBay as a Fine minus, in great shape except for some minor spine wear and a small chip from the ULC. Wow, what a great guess! But wrong. This is from a great seller that graded it a FR 1.0. In the simple-minded way that I spread shipping cost over a box, I figured that I paid about a penny shipping for this book. Jack
  8. A couple of Atlas war books -- not high enough grade for anyone to slobber over, but it wouldn't lower the grades if you did! Battle Ground 13 1956, classic Heath cover. Battlefront 47 1957, possible Kida cover according to the Atlas Tales site. I'm not complaining about the condition for under $2. Jack
  9. A couple more "low-grade but I like 'em anyway" from the same lot. Black Magic 18, 1952, Simon and Kirby, complete reader copy. Captain Midnight 61, 1947/48, Gerber 6. Jack (shameless)
  10. Just for fun, let's have some guesses of what I paid for this low-grade but complete copy of Long Bow 9, 1952/53, final issue of the series from Fiction House. The answer is not zero. Jack
  11. Cool book Jack (thumbs u Where ya been? Thanks for the kudos on the book. Busy as %^& Getting ready to leave, trip to WI, catching up, part of a conference today and hosting a Nobel Prize winner's (!) visit tomorrow. Just haven't had time for funnybook stuff lately. The box w/ the Cole book sat unopened for over a week! Jack One day you will be a Nobel laureate. Yeah, right -- if the expansion of the earth doesn't shut us all down first. Jack
  12. Wow! Is that ciorac's copy? Jack Nope - this 32 below was a similar book that belonged to Ciorac, which I was fortunate to acquire earlier this year. Another great example of a ww2 Big Shot cover (and by far one of my top 3 ww2 themed covers overall). D'oh! I'm confusing Sparky Watts with Joe Palooka. I'd take Boody Rogers over Ham Fisher (assuming he drew the cover of #32 -- his name isn't on the slab), but they're both great WWII covers. Jack
  13. Those are great! Cole, or Cole-esque? He liked the diagonal chase across the cover. Spurs Jackson! Funniest mixed-genre book of all. Wow! Is that ciorac's copy? Jack

  15. I like the L. B. Cole cover of All-Famous Crime 5 from 1952 enough to post it here too -- but not on the Short Bus this time! Jack
  16. L. B. Cole cover on All-Famous Crime 5 from 1952. Not as spectacular as his science fiction or horror covers, but it's eye-catching with those garish Cole poster colors. I was lucky to win a nice (about FN+) copy for about $20! Jack
  17. love the flaming eye robot snake cover! I wish I had a nickel for every time I've heard that phrase! It caught my eye (so to speak) too. What would be the advantage of having the flames come out of the eyes rather than, say, the nose or mouth? A fiendish design for sure! Jack
  18. No. Here's another few panels of the story. Hint: The strip was published for 11 consecutive months (seven appearances were in one comic book and the final four were in another title.) I think everyone here noticed her sensitive feelers. Good win, Scrooge! Jack
  19. Slam Bradley again? If I'm wrong, "Then kill me!" Jack
  20. Shameful, isn't it! Thanks for restarting one of my favorite threads. I'm posting for several reasons: I love your Harold Teen. What a great copy! Classic comic strip that introduced a lot of slang into the English language. Yowzah! I've gotten a bunch of Four Colors lately, but not a single one missing from the thread. I'm going to post my new Four Color 1270 anyway because I like it so much. Attractive copy of an (I think) harder to get issue, despite the blotch near the piano leg. I'm a big Rocky and Bullwinkle fan! Last, has anyone heard from jmg3637 lately? I've been trying to reach him for quite a while to finish my side of a trade, and can't get a reply by PM or email. (I'm embarrassed that the trade isn't finished after so long.) Jack
  21. With the sweat beads, wide eyes and all, she wouldn't be out of place in a manga book! Cool book. Jack
  22. Bloody paratrooper? Is it on The List? Jack
  23. I can't look at that cover without thinking of the parody Jack Who knew?
  24. To be fair, since I include the bi-monthly titles, i.e., I'd buy the Feb-March issue, not all these were published on a given month but they would still live side-by-side on the newsstands. I bought the first books in July 2001 not realizing what would ensue ... I'm now 6 years and 10 months into the craziness. I have accumulated 408 books (counting the one book in the mail to me as we speak) and have another 12 to go. Well, 11 that is if Selegue digs out the Black Rider he promised he would Why do I suddenly feel like I'm surrounded by bright lights? I'm innocent, I tell yez! It shouldn't be too hard to find, if I ever find time to travel to the Fortress of Solicitude, since B ought to be right next to A (for Airboy). Jack
  25. Facing a jam-packed March 1952 news stand must have been daunting for a kid with a few dimes in his pocket! Somehow it seems that these Star covers would stand out no matter what the competition looked like. Thanks for the group shots! Jack
