  1. nah, they're just pretty low grade is all. that price includes shipping and BP, btw. Heritage weekly auction Really? I thought that Heritage was pretty much top dollar for everything! Lower grade comics for reasonable prices? I'll have to give them a look sometime. They look attractive from the scans. What do you mean by low grade? Jack i mean that if they went to CGC - which they won't - and came back with an average grade of VG-, i would be both shocked and happy. G or G+ at best. but staples are tight, books are complete, and pages are still supple. so, they are good for me for now. if i ever decide to sell the 69, i will alert you first Well, that's a different story. On closer inspection, there's all that edge chipping, poor centering, even NAKED PIXIES! $14.79 max! Thanks, Jack
  2. They deserve far worse for unleashing that movie on an unsuspecting public. It says "Pauly Shore" right on it. That should have been a more effective warning label than "This product will kill you" on a pack of cigarettes. Jack
  3. I agree -- this is one of my favorite mad scientist covers. I'd love to find an affordable copy. A particularly cool detail is that the woman in bondage is a cocktail gown has "What the...?" rather than terror on her face. Has any of this material been reprinted? Is there a story inside that matches the cover? GCD has the Tuska, not Fine, attribution right. Jack This cover has everything...a hero with guns ablazing, a female in distress (with guns ablazing), apes, a secret laboratory with a crazy hypodermic toting green skinned troll/mad scientist. It just doesn't get much better! Beautiful copy BZ. (And thanks for posting all the Mystery Men is your thread (thumbs u )
  4. Fantastic! What's up with "earthly prize" Cynde? She's mute? Do you think that Rex made a wise choice for interplanetary flights? Lord Marvel is fantastic! He reminds me of a character from a much later comic book -- underground I think -- with his tiny features on a big head. If I find him, I'll post a pic. Thanks, Jack
  5. Maybe I'm the only one (in the world?) who would care. Forget maybe. Here goes anyway: "Wavelengths from 100 billion to one trillion per second" -- those are frequencies, not wavelengths, and they correspond to a range from the top of microwaves into the far infrared. "2 x 10**16 to 6 x 10** 7 [Hz]" = vacuum ultraviolet to soft X-rays. Jack
  6. Actually, I had no problem with that part at all. Nothing wrong with freezing gases to a solid, and with them melting as they warm up. You could wonder why he was immune to the cold, but it's traditional for superheroes not to be harmed by their own powers. Fun story, Scrooge -- thanks for posting it. I wonder what inspired the writer to use cyanogen (C2N2), a pretty unusual compound compared to, say, hydrogen cyanide. Jack
  7. That was Tales Of The Unexpected #16, Jack That must be the one I'm thinking of. Thanks, Angelo. Jack

  9. AAAUUUGGGHHH!! #69 is one of my top GA covers. Less than $15 each for those? Did this involve knocking over any little old ladies? Great catch! Jack
  10. Yeah, you get the free Boy's Life book I sent to you... : Pre-payment! Good thing I delivered my services in a timely manner. Jack Ummm...I'm NOT going there, ... My ADVERTISING services! Did I take a wrong turn and end up in the Double Entendre thread? Jack
  11. Yeah, you get the free Boy's Life book I sent to you... : Pre-payment! Good thing I delivered my services in a timely manner. Jack
  12. I thought that you put those "For quick profit place on sale at once" bands on there yourself! (Do I get a commission for advertising?) "Spies" is an interesting cover. Until Dave McKean's Sandman work, I bet there was only a handful of collage comic-book covers. (Can any think of others? Maybe some Treasure Chest?) Thanks again. Jack Glad you liked them, Jack:) I actually have a full run of the books all except the Teen and Spies books...I kept one of each of the best ones I found at the warehouse...and he's right, about the sale, ..but my daughter hasn't picked a date yet, so I'm not frantic yet... When I was at the warehouse...I did rescue a number of these packages intact..I thought they were more interesting than the books, I picked the ones with the least ink, but there is still ink on the sides...there is one with at least one Ghosts book if anyone is really interested, I guess I would put them in the market place, or the VCC.
  13. Great catch! Hasen cover, but he seemed to be trying to reflect Peter's baroque doodlies in some details (the sword in the left foreground). Classic "male submission" cover theme too -- he draws WW as one tough lady. Jack
  14. Comic books can sure carry a load of memories! Thanks for the story. Jack
  15. Ask Sharon whether she has another one in her prenuptial clearance sale. Jack
  16. Obviously I like 'em too! Great copies, including one (Spies) that I don't have. Jack
  17. Thanks and true enough. Who do you think did the cover? Morrow? What other thread to these books belong in? I can repost them there. The "quarter books and giants" thread on Silver Age, or should I squeeze them into a Golden Age thread? Silver tends to be more superhero-centric. Jack
  18. Since this is the thread that inspired Sharon (skypinkblu) to ask whether I was interested in some of her World Around Us books, I'll post the books I just received here. They're really a step up from most short-bussers though. World Around Us 3, Nov 1958, L. B. Cole cover (eat your hearts out, Cole collectors), "Leonard Cole" art director. I didn't know that, but it explains why L. B. did some covers in the series. I had a devil of a time trying to get the scan to match the book, and succeeded mostly in making it look splotchy. The background is a deep aqua or turquoise that I've rarely seen on comic book covers. These are from the "bakertowne properties" warehouse books, so there's som distributor's purple ink around the edges, but it's inobtrusive on this book. World Around Us 24, Aug 1960. This book is the most fun read (browse, really) of the bunch. Morrow and Evans art. Another tough one to adjust the scan. World Around Us 28, Aug 1960. Another L. B. Cole cover, this time with Crandall, Evans, Morrow, Torres and Wildey artwork inside. World Around Us 31, Aug 1960. Crandall/Evans, Ingels, Kinstler, Kirby artwork inside. And a bonus! (Thanks, Sharon.) The Best from Boys' Life Comics 2. January 1958. I have a few other issues in the series, but this one is much nicer. Jack
  19. Are these all from your recent OO buy? Very nice, esp. this one! Jack
  20. Interesting that this Thor was blond too, like his later Marvel namesake. Could Kirby and Lee have vaguely remembered this story instead of the red-haired Thor of the Norse myths? (Maybe not Kirby -- didn't he do a red-haired Thor in an earlier one-shot DC story?) Jack Cover story from Adventure Comics 75, June 1942. The coloring would have been chosen by the DC colorists rather than Simon & Kirby. That's one. Wasn't there also a Silver Age DC Thor by Kirby with red hair? In one of the anthologies like Strange Adventures or My Greatest Adventure? I can't put my finger on it. Jack

  22. What is that light blue rectangle supposed to be? A window? The proverbial Light at the End of the Tunnel? A last-minute edit to cover something else up? Early Vinnie Colletta backgrounds? Great stuff, BZ! Jack
  23. I agree most have really cool covers and lots of hidden gems in the runs. Those guys really want to get that tube open In that case, they should connect a second tank to the oxy-acetylene torch! Dr. Beardface seems especially pleased to have a Woman in Tube, judging from his hand jive. Jack
  24. What a cool Heroic cover! Is there a Hydroman/ Man O'Metal (right?) teamup inside, or just on the cover? Especially interesting that Man O'Metal seems to be presaging Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" from a few Superbowls ago. Pretty daring for the 40s. [PS: Bill's back. If I had read ahead I would have realized that he'd beat me to the punch.] Jack even a chain!
  25. Good choice. (thumbs u Uh-huh. Sounds to me like a scheme to raise funnybook money. At a dime a dance, he'll be shopping for pre-Robin Detectives in no time. We can call him Lo-lo-lo-lola! I'm having trouble with the fine print. Does that Genuine Portable Typewriter connect to the internet? Jack wireless or hard-wired?
