    ON NEWSSTANDS MAY 1959

Was Jack Kirby trying to make a decision on his career path? Work for Goodman and Stanley again or do superheroes at Archie and work with Joe Simon again?

With what was released in May, he might've been leaning towards Archie....

Though he'd only do one story in The Double Life of Private Strong #2 (inked by maybe Joe Simon?) Story by... sure reads like Kirby, might be him and Simon both to some degree...

Jack Kirby with Joe Simon created Captain America, a comic book that sold in the Millions. A Huge Hit.

Jack Kirby with Joe Simon created the Boy Commandos for DC Comics, another comic book that sold in the Millions. A Huge Hit.

Jack Kirby with Joe Simon created the Newsboy Legion for DC Comics, another comic book that sold in the Millions. A Huge Hit.

Jack Kirby with Joe Simon created Young Romance, bringing the romance genre to comics. Along with its companion Young Love, those comics sold in the Millions for EIGHT YEARS. A huge Hit.

During this time, Stan Lee had no hits.

Once Joe Simon stopped working with Jack, he never again had a hit.

Jack Kirby with Stan Lee had huge success during the Silver Age of Comics.

Once Jack left Marvel, Stan never again achieved the type of success he did during the Silver Age.

(Unless you count, strong-arming Marvel for a million dollar a year salary to be the 'face' of the company and not actual create anything.)

Jack Kirby without Joe Simon or Stan Lee, created a whole Universe of new characters. His Fourth World stories have been reprinted as a collection at the same pace as any of his Silver Age work. It gets reprinted again, and again, and again...

in  Jack Kirby's New Gods (DC, 1998 series) ([February] 1998) [new colored background on cover], ([February] 1998) [gray tone only]

in  Millennium Edition: New Gods 1 (DC, 2000 series) (June 2000)

in  Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus (DC, 2007 series) #1 ([August] 2007)

in  Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus (DC, 2011 series) #1 ([November] 2011)

in  DC Comics Graphic Novel Collection (Eaglemoss Publications, 2015 series) #84 - New Gods 1 ([September 2016]), #84 - New Gods 1([September 2016])

in  The Fourth World Omnibus by Jack Kirby (DC, 2017 series) (2017 [February 2018])

in  New Gods by Jack Kirby (DC, 2018 series) ([October] 2018)

in Absolute Fourth World by Jack Kirby Vol. 1 Hardcover – June 30, 2020

in Fourth World by Jack Kirby Omnibus (New Printing) Hardcover – September 14, 2021

At a time when very few series' for DC OR Marvel made it past just a few issues, Kirby's New Gods went 19, Mister Miracle 25, and Kamandi for 58.

His Fourth World characters were absorbed into the DC Universe, leading to movie appearances, TV appearances and animation projects.

He has been successful wherever he worked in comics.

Brother Power, the Geek, not so much.

Stan Lee had snappy dialogue. Jack Kirby had Fantastic Worlds of Creative Ideas. With everyone he ever worked with.

To say that Joe Simon never had a hit without Jack Kirby is plain wrong. The problem is nobody studies Joe Simon and his career and assumes that he didn’t have anything else. Can’t know about someone’s achievements if nobody studies them. Sick magazine was a huge hit back then, being Mad Magazines biggest competitor, created by Joe and drawing the talented of Joe himself, Bob Powell, Jack Davis, Angelo Torres among others. Joe unlike Jack,’left comic books and created a hit outside of the stuff they were familiar with.

someone else mentioned that Jack was the junior partner in the golden age. During Simon and Kirby, Joe was the bigger name in comics. He hired Jack to work for him on Blue Bolt. Joe was the more dominant figure during this time. And they worked so well together, splitting everything 50/50 and lasting almost two decades together. Soemthing Jack would never experience again with another collaborator.

they both needed each other, apart, Jack never sold better than when he was with Joe. And without Jack, doing comics just wasn’t the same for Joe. Joe lost a lot of the passion following mainlines split. They were never as sucessful apart compared to together. But to say Jack didn’t need Joe, well that’s just not true. Even Jack’s son said Jack owed a lot to Joe.

the wheel of death clearly draws attention from the eye!! Sheesh looks that Clown with the oversized Hatchet right below it though!! That’s nightmare fuel right there!!

agreed. The Cover just screams classic Simon and Kirby. I think it was Syd Shores inking, the Cap face looks altered not as how Joe and Jack drew. The clowns, well Simon and Kirby had a thing for those. When I was growing up in Joe's aparment, I took a look at all the covers. THIS cover jumped out at me. Not because of Cap or bucky but I was fascinated with the wheel of death, the Ringmaster pointing at it and everything about it. Since becoming older, Ive grown to like some of the other Cap covers better, but I still love the Ringmaster/wheel of death area. Truly amazing

Hard to pick my top 3 this year...but these are the ones that immediately come to mind if asked.

The FF 36 has been on my list for some time now. It is one of my favorite covers from the Kirby run. I just got it so the book is fresh to my collection

The Amazing Adventures was a surprise acquisition. Opportunity availed itself and the trigger was pulled. A big thank you to my friend R... who decided to let it go.

The True Bride To Be Romances OA is absolutely my best addition of the year. I was the only bidder on the auction (the 'bay') and no one more surprised than me. It is definitely my favorite this year. A Kirby romance cover. Yowza!

Appreciate the kind words. What did you and Joe discuss? He was in San Diego once I believe, in 1998 to accept the Inkpot award. When he passed (i had no control over anything) And his awards was thrown out by his daughter. A good friend saved them and generously reunited me with them. Glad to still have them, Im intrested to hear of any stories he might have shared or if it was just simple small talk.

Your Grandpa was an awesome artist.  Were you able to get all the Captain America’s you were looking for?

been waiting to see some simon and kirby!

Jason, I apprecite the kind words about Joe. he is very underappreciated as to his talent of being an artist. He is often credited for his business skills and writing but rarely his ablity to draw. I saw first hand his talent and boy was it there. As to your question regarding captain america. I have been wanting a set of captain america comics #1-10 for the longest time. Since right after Joe passed. Up until last month I was missing issues 1,3,6. I am glad to report that I have made progress on the run. My copies are definitely lower grade copies as thats all I can afford. But I am trying. My next challenge is issue 1. Thats the big one. I rarely post on CGC boards and really just stay in contact with a few buddies on here. You can reach me on facebook and instrgam much easier and to keep up with books I get. Facebook is where I post Personal Collection books and Instrgam I post personal collection and books that are passing through. These are their handles: Jesse Simon (fb) Simon_comics (insta)

Totally agree with that. Cracking it is risky. Reading it is really risky. And 38K isn't really a deal I think. Youre going to want a complete copy and that will probably cost possibly another 15 to 20k to make this one whole again. Its not just finding the missing wraps but paying to have them attached by a professional. Andthen the book will still have a green or purple label.

I'm assuming the book your looking at is the one on e bay (I haven't read all the posts here). It looks ok. But if one was going to spend almost 40 on an incomplete copy I would say might as well spend a little more on a restored but complete copy. Seems around 50K is the magic number for a presentable and complete copy right now.

Final thought - does it have to be a #1? You can get a really sweet of example of issues 2 - 10 for <10 to 25K , depending on which one you choose.

I need issue 1 and 3 as I have the rest. I have a very nice presenting issue 2 thats missing centerfold. The rest I need to upgrade eventually But IM happy with them. Just 1 and 3 are needed to complete the set. I think with everyone's input, Im not a the right moment to purchase a copy. I think I need a wait another year or 2 and wait for a lpw grade restored thats complete

I didn't realize before but Joe Simon did the cover art for Captain America issue 2, and it's a pretty great cover. I believe its the only cover credited to him in the series.  There is a 8.0 coming to Heritage on the 12th that's a real beauty.

that is the only SOLO joe simon cover of issue 1-10. But Joe contributed and helped with all the other covers, some more and some less. I think issue 5 has the least amount of Joe in a cap 1,5-10. 3,4 are both schomburg and the rest are simon and kirby. Sometimes Syd shores and others helped out
