  2. I would share some examples of pictures to allow for a better idea. If you have ASM 1, even a low grade copy is worth grading due to the value it has. But if you have something like avengers 12 in lower grade, well it’s still a cool book but not as valuable and likely not worth spending the time to grade. Same could be said for issues of Daredevil in the teens and twenties issue wise.

A while back I made a post asking why folks would pay big bucks for certain comics and I used the word greed and speculation (bad choice of the word greed on my part), and there was a bit of grumbling and consternation by some members. Many if not most were denying that speculation had anything to do with paying some big bucks for certain comics, but rather paying the big bucks had more to do with affinity with a certain character or book. I didn't buy that argument then and don't now either.

Most of you are far more sophisticated comic aficionados than I will ever be, but as the comic novice that I am, I find it hard to understand the issue people have with a detached centerfold, especially once it's encapsulated never intended to be read or opened again. I completely would understand your dismay if it was missing, but if it's only a staple pop or two to the inner wrap that you will never see? How does that change your love of a certain character in that book or the complete book, if not for the speculation factor that you feel cheated out of some perceived value?

You are not wrong in your assessment. It bothers me for some reason. But I understand it as a flaw that only really bumps a book down 0.5-1.0 grade points for the reasons you mention.

I think some people see that flaw and they think ew, yuck it's a 2.0 or 3.0 at best and that is fine and well but that is their PERSONAL standard of grading (and maybe in line with a few other places). CGC differs on it. As I mentioned earlier, I always ask this question is buying a raw book not in person and if its a graded book, I take a sec to check the cert and notes. Pretty easy for me to avoid buying a detached centerfold and wait to find a VG or so copy where that flaw is not present.

  4. I would also add that the change in stance for grading in certain areas is something that us customers and collectors have lobbied for....so when I give the example of a book that was a 4.0 that could now, with fresh eyes and updated standards, be a 4.5-5.0, that is not a "CGC problem" as you state. That is a community change within the hobby and as mentioned before, I would be happy if my book improved upon a second grading. At the end of the day if you don't think that is worth $25-30, that's fine. Just know that your green books will likely never get the same value as this new label down the road (some obvious potential exceptions may apply for a rare really desired signature, like Cole or Baker or something to that degree).

Good points -- but everything you raise is a CGC problem NOT a customer's problem.  Why make it a customer's problem by making us pay?  MONOPOLY CASH GRAB.  CGC knows they're the only dog in the hunt and while they are very cool about a lot of things, and I praise them regularly, this is just robbery.

How else is CGC supposed to protect themselves? Say I am a shady person. I have a bunch of green label books that I have purchased, signed by Stan Lee that were unverified. I took some time (because that's all it takes) to practice his signature and once I feel ready, I swap all of the legit books out for others I have (some are lower grades even and all with the fake sigs on them)

If CGC just reholders these without any closer inspection, these go into the world as fakes that CGC handled and missed. Thus it makes sense to make people pay to re-grade and inspect, that way this does not happen. And you may say well that is a pretty far fetched scam....and to that I will say, that is what people would have said about the actual scandal that did happen.

I am sure CGC would be all ears to hear how they could prevent this without having to charge customers to have it regraded again. And if you are suggesting "well they just need a better tamper proof case". Okay, even that would cost money to design and then produce and you can bet we would be paying more for such a thing so in the end, it is still the customer paying more, whether its for the better product or to have CGC re-grade it.

  6. Virtual massages eh?

Seems like there is untapped potential here. You call in and get a very vivid description of how you will be massaged to the point it feels almost like the real thing...

THIS is BS and a CASH GRAB. !!

Pay for a REHOLDER - yes -- Pay for a JSA verification - Yes -- but PAY to have the same fkn grade put on the book !! Hell NO!!  That absolute robbery!!  What is changing?  You guys graded the book already and were paid for the grading.  Now you want to be paid a 2nd time to grade a book you already graded?  Did you damage it when you removed it from the green label slab?  Why do you need to re- grade it?  Robbery!  Extremely unethical.

To drive interest in the new label you guys SHOULD BE offering special incentives to have all the green labels re submitted.  Get these new labels out there in circulation and on eBay etc.  But often the forest can't be seen thru the cash grab.

I will NOT be submitting any of my GREEN label books.

I can see your point to a degree. Also though, standards of grading have changed. It is not a static thing and many things have changed from even a decade ago. Hence why a re-grade is needed. For example certain flaws are more forgiveable so there is a chance your green labelled 4.0 with a signature on it could now be considered a 4.5-5.0 based on current grading practices. Personally, I would be happy to have updated eyes take a look at the book.

I can see the frustration in a book graded only a few years ago having to go through the process again but all of it is a safety measure. CGC got rocked with scandal and the last thing they need is another person trying one where they submit wrong books inside slabs. CGC just copying the grade without checking it over opens the door for problems that they do not want to deal with again.

This book would be perfect for CGC grading contest.  It would throw everyone off included myself.

Curious where you had it....I took a quick look, like 5 seconds before scrolling down and said 3.5 maybe 4.0.

Which is odd because I have used that strategy before when grading on the contest and done very well. I have also tried it and done very poorly.

  9. I would say no

Arguably a graded book with no cover like this one (other more rare books it is a difference story) would be tougher to sell....if I am buying a coverless book it is to complete a run or to read. And sometimes its people who may have a cover to match.. Getting such a book graded doesn't make much sense.

Now if I had something like a coverless Batman 1 or something of similar level, I might consider slabbing but Avengers 2 is not on that level.

I'm sorry, but if I bought that book from any reputable dealer as a 4.0 and discovered it had a detached centerfold, I'd return it and expect a full refund.

Did we ever find out who the prominent people who wanted the labels to contain less information were?

Checking the grader's note before buying a slab has ALWAYS been part of my buying process. Not doing so is not doing your due diligence of accessing the information that is available. It would be the equivalent of buying a raw book without inspecting or asking for a number of pictures to ensure you are in agreeance with the grade given by the seller.

My first comics were late ‘50’s early ‘60’s DC war. My dad bought them and gave them to me after he read them along with Batman & Detectives. I loved the stories and art by Kubert & Heath. They also had continuing stories with characters that appeared in every issue. They still stand up well. Later I graduated to the Enemy Ace and the Unknown Soldier. Excellent reads.

Also of note, are the Revolutionary War tales of Tomahawk. The last couple years of Star Spangled are great cover to cover reads.

Same....my dad took me to my first comic shop in the 90's and was always digging in the $1 or less bins which is where many of the 60s and 70s war titles languished at the time (usually rough shape). He thought they were cool and so did I. Eventually I moved away into superheroes but I have always had a soft spot for titles like GI Combat with the Haunted Tank, Our Army At War with Sgt Rock and titles like Weird War. In the last 15 years or so I have dug back even further but only when the opportunity presents itself. As I have come to appreciate the art more in my later years, older books from the 50s and 40s intrigue me in ways they previously did not

    1. I have a smattering of Golden Age war titles :  It would be fun to know which ones you have.

    2. I am considering chasing after a complete run of Atlas Comics War Adventures : you can't go wrong with that, as some have pointed out already.

    3. Which runs are obtainable : The larger publishers (by comparison) are not difficult to collect, if condition is of no or little consequence to you.  Although some of the smaller publishers (and occasionally even the larger ones) tend to have a few issues that are just downright scarce to find, in any condition.

    4. great in terms of art/stories : Many have chimed in already, and I agree with a lot of what has already been said (Atlas, Farrell, EC, Standard, etc., and the particular titles mentioned: you can't go wrong).  But I find it interesting (if somewhat exasperating) that nobody yet has mentioned DC War.  While four of the DC Big Five started in 1952 (if you include the early portion of G.I. Combat from Quality), and one of them started in 1954, they do have very long runs, going into Bronze and beyond.  BUT, their early (pre-1961) output is great in so many ways (not to overly denigrate their Silver and Bronze runs, which have their own strengths).  In this genre, the so-called GA "cutoff" at 1956 seems a bit spurious, and I personally tend to think of the 10-cent cover price to the 12-cent cover price time marker as a "better" determinant of "change".  That is, the entire 1950's decade from DC feels to me to have a wonderful quality.  And yes, while switching from Pre-Code to Post-Code does reflect a sizeable shift in aesthetics and story content, probably the best output in DC War was in the later part of the 1950's, in both art and content.  Thus, the recommendation from me is for the 1950's (and especially late 1950's) runs of:

    All-American Men Of War

    G.I. Combat

    Our Army At War

    Our Fighting Forces

    Star Spangled War Stories

I will share an image of my war issues tonight when I am relaxin next to my comics haha

And I agree, I love a lot of the early GI Combat stuff and in particular would love to get my hands on a few issues in particular that Heath drew. I know its not the Golden Age but I am also trying to track down the run of Star Spangled War Stories that feature dinosaurs (I think it was a pretty decent stretch that did this). I am at a modest three issues from that stretch

Battlefield from Atlas is great, 11 issues and packed full of great material/covers.  There's a collected volume.  Battlefront is another that is pretty great from start to finish, but a bit longer.  It catches the early stuff and the later stuff when Sinnott, Severin, etc., were at their finest.  If you want the full spectrum, Battle starts in the early 50s and then ends with Kirby/Ditko pre-hero Marvel stuff.  It's got everything from Atlas, but the later 50s stuff isn't as high-yield.

Outside of Atlas the EC war stuff is pretty good, it's a little more uniform IMO, so getting a few representative issues makes more sense to me than completing a run.  The same applies to Farrell, although the shorter runs make completing them easier, but they all kinda blend together.  Exciting War from Standard is a favorite of mine, and Battlefront from Standard is only one issue that's great from cover to cover so that makes an easy run to complete.  There's one coming up on HA (https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/war/battlefront-5-standard-1952-condition-fn-/p/122421-33001.s?ic4=ListView-Thumbnail-071515).  Foxhole is 5 issues, but they're all now 4 figures in rough shape.

IMO, Atlas stands out above the rest in terms of quality.

Thanks! I foolishly turned down a chance to get the foxhole books (4 of the 5 anyway) and regret it. I will definitely look into Battlefield

  14. Hi everyone,

So I am a secondary educator and every 2 years our school puts on a Relay 4 Life event in support of cancer research. It is a great fundraiser and a lot of fun for the students who participate and raise money as well as us teachers. I want to help out the cause and decided I would offer up a mystery box in exchange for donations.

Here is how it works. Below is a link to my team's donation page. Simply make a donation (I think $5 minimum makes sense) and your name will be entered in to win a mystery box that I have curated. The mystery box prize will depend on how much we raise.

Raise under $100- $50 mystery box value

Raise $100-300- $100 mystery box value

Raise $300-500- $150 mystery box value (CGC graded book pre 1980 guaranteed to be included)

Raise $500+ - $250+ value mystery box (CGC graded book pre 1980 guaranteed to be included)

Just make sure when you donate, you put a name (can be your username here to keep it easy). At the end of fundraising (two weeks from today), I will post a list of all the donators to confirm before I pick a winner for the mystery box. Again, it does not matter how much you donate but I am going to ask for a $5 minimum. If you have any further questions, let me know. Thanks!

Do we have any previous Golden Age War comic thread?

    ???

There are but I find those are people posting stuff they’ve acquired and other titles specifically…im looking for recommendations on the best. Even if there are some more obscure short runs that yield great stories.

  16. So I have a smattering of Golden Age war titles but I feel like I never know which runs or series are the best to go after. I am considering chasing after a complete run of Atlas Comics War Adventures, but thought I would open up the floor to hear people's favourites for this genre. Which runs are obtainable and also great in terms of art/stories that you recommend?

  17. Ooooo CGC might have another money making opportunity for themselves. Charge an extra $7 for a nice colour printed image of the signature, that way people get the book encased in the lovely new JSA label PLUS a high quality image of the interior signature they can no longer look at that. This can just be slipped into the bag that CGC sends the graded comic back in.
