  1. I agree with the above. It’s lovely as is and while I don’t generally like resto or conserved books that would be one I’d be fine owning.
  2. I should think removing such conserved work would leave you with a rather nasty looking book. Pics might help some more experience souls to chime in with better insight.
  3. CGC Mike gave me this face With I think means "Oh god those grades are hideously wrong"
  4. I’m also at 4.0-4.5 for the reasons others have stated
  5. 6 again for me. Went 8.0 on the Looney and 9.2 on the DD and those hurt me. Others were dead on or off by one
  6. 6 points for me. The Cerebus didn’t kill me as I KNOW CGC grades those puppies nicer than some. I shot too high on the Super comics (9.4 from me) and was too low (9.0 from me) on the surfer
  7. My wife had the steamer out last night and it is sitting on our dining room table.....methinks I shall dig out some of my junkers and play around. I will share results because I am willing to bet that doing this as opposed to the "low and slow" method, causes some noticeable changes to the book that can be detected. Emphasis on "can be"...maybe CGC does not catch them all so those who do use this method HAVE gotten it past CGC and thus maybe assumed all was well with their method.
  8. Generally, this guy puts out very good content. I do think he should have considered the fact the books were cleaned before hand. He does not really divulge what his tactics to clean were so if wet materials or chemicals of some sort or other products were used, we don't know. I also noted that, if they were just dry cleaned by him, then perhaps it was the previous owner who chemically cleaned them. I think finding out where he got the books would help determine that. If they were all purchased from the same seller, I think it stands to reason that person cleaned them in some way CGC could detect. If they were bought from multiple sellers, the chances that he grabbed several books that were chemically cleaned seems low. This means it has something to do with his method. Finally, it is possible that an amateur grader thought they detected something or were surprised by the quality of the dry clean job and decided "hey this looks too sharp, must be chemically done so I will give it the purple label". That should NOT happen but it is a possible outcome in this specific scenario.
  9. 4.5 for sure from me....Spine and corner wear might be a little too heavy to hit 5.0
  10. Either way, whether someone took the time to affix it or not to the existing staples, it still implies the fact it is from another book entirely, which is the bigger issue
  11. Yeah the centrefold crease while it can likely be reduced with a press, it breaks colour so it will still be there and CGC hits those hard. It will still be a very very nice 4.0-4.5 at best and one you should cherish!
  12. Why not? Married just means parts from another book were added to a book that was missing said parts. As has been said, someone took a centrefold from another copy and slid it in. The evident could be a variety of things, from where the staples holes are and lineup, to the page quality different from others in the book.
  13. Pics in the bags can be hard to tell....plus back covers needed to really assess. I think the corner def played into the grade on the first. And not to say mishandling did not occur, but you would be surprised what you miss. I send in a modest 20 or so books a year, so I am able to take before pics when I send just to be safe. I got back a book that has a small minute dirt mark on the cover that I swore never was there when I sent it. But sure enough, when I looked back at the pics I took before sending, it was there. So my error, not CGCs I also think this circled spot, unless something on the bag is the issue with Venom 27
  14. Definitely a shame that books you sent in were not pressed when you requested as much. I would expect CGC to cover all associated costs shipping them back, actually pressing, grading them again and returning to you. As for your gripe about notes, I understand it but CGC rarely does on books that are 9.2-9.6. If you are wondering why, part of it is due to time. If they noted every one, there would be worse delays in getting books back. Astute and experience graders can determine why a book get a 9.2 vs 9.4 vs 9.6. Your best bet if you get books back and would like to know, is to share pics of the book in questions (before and after slabbing if possible). People on here who have no connection to you and your comic will be more critical of it than you are. That is just a fact. I have had books that I love and look at and think "hey this could be really high grade and might be worth submitting" but then upon sharing pictures, I get the reality check I need from others showing me that "yes, that spine tick or small ding or slight colour rub really means it is a 9.4 at best". Finally, from experience the areas to look extremely close at when wondering why a 9.4 or 9.6 did not come back a 9.8 are the spine (and I mean look really close, front and back), the staples (should have not noticeable marks or scuffs or fraying), the corners (if they are blunted or rounded even slightly along the spine corners or if they are not sharp along the reading edge, a 9.8 it will not be) and finally the covers themselves (when viewed under good lighting, you should not see indents or marks or scuffs or any colour rub). If you get a book back that is a 9.4 and all of those things are actually perfect, then you have a case for the complaint. But I am willing to bet that once shared, you will find more critical eyes than your own that will alert you to the problems. It is a learning curve, something even I find I learn more about every day after 20+ years collecting.
  15. The blackish spots would concern me personally. That and I hate ugly stains (small water stains I can live with personally, but this I would be selling/passing on if I had it). The book is one I feel like you can find for a reasonable price in 4.0-6.0 range without such a stain so maybe selling and putting the money towards that is the better approach to guarantee your happiness with it
  16. This is pretty much the answer. Don't quote me but I am pretty sure the best blue label I ever personally saw was 4.0 for a Golden Age book. Typically though for the shape of those types of books, you can expect a blue 1.0-3.0 when the cover is detached. I know that a very sharp copy of Hulk 180 was detached at one staple and received a blue label 6.5 (which is the highest grade I have seen for a book with a detached staple, that I can recall). There might have been a Golden Age one that landed in the 7s but I cannot seem to find it if it was posted on these boards somewhere....
  17. I was off by one grade on all. The GA issues, I was under by 0.5 a grade (I had 4.0 and 7.5 respectively), the DD I was one under with a 9.0 and the Betty and Veronica I KNEW I should have gone 9.6 but safely labelled 9.4 Oh and I overgraded the FF 94 by 0.5. Overall, 5 points and I am happy with that but clearly some competition in this one!
  18. The bottom two pics in the listing are from another book. Obviously this loser grabbed pictures from somewhere.
  19. I'm high on my own supply. I love my floppies. I know I could access everything digitally or through omnis and other means but part of the hobby that I love most is the physical book. This does make it hard to combine investing with collecting UNLESS I am investing in books I care to not collect (which there are many so it could be done but again, tends to take away from my time enjoying collecting).
  20. It would be kinda funny for someone with a VG copy of Brave and Bold #28 to go in and try to sell to them, quoting the store's own insane ask as their own (or even at a 40% discount). I am curious what the conversation would be like.
  21. Definitely appears to be colour rub. I forsee top grade being 9.2-9.4 for this one because of it.
