    Back to comics.

For whatever reason, I've never had a solid copy NM/MT copy of #35. Most of my buying of raw Bone comics occurred between 2008 & 2010 with infrequent purchases between 2012 & 2016. I probably have 8-10 copies of this issue and they're all NM+ at best with an average grade of NM. Even the two below, which I thought had a chance before their journey started, were accurately graded by CGC and I should have seen the issues beforehand. The second one has an unfortunate NCB crease on the front cover that appears to be too difficult to press out. Oh well.

FYI, it's not my intent to disparage 9.6s in this thread lol. I started this collection with the goal of having the first 8 issues in blue label 9.8s and the rest in yellow label 9.8s. It's been a whole lotta fun as well as incredibly challenging. I'm getting very close to the end so some minor frustrations tend to surface with the last remaining books :foryou:

    Now’s your chance on the 9.8 #35 https://www.ebay.com/itm/256133229200

Any guesses on the final prices for the ComicLink Bone #1s? Not being able to see the back covers has become a dealbreaker for me, especially for something like the CBCS 9.8. The front cover looks very good but there could be a multitude of problems on the flip side and I’m guessing a lot of people would want to covert this to CGC. Signature and sketch are on the inside cover so it would get a universal label.

The 9.6 doesn't look that good to me - is that a color breaking spine tic to the left of the B in the logo, and what are all those white spots?  Are those on the case or the book?

  3. Anyone notice the auctions have kind of dried up? There was a while where HA auctioned 9.6s and 9.8s of #4 seemingly every auction. Several 9.8 #9s and 11s over a few months too. Not much new on eBay for a while too. Appreciate the two #1s on CL but it’s pretty slim pickings compared to last fall.

Wow - now I feel like my 9.8 #35 was a good buy!

  5. Am I correct in understanding there is no Cartoon Books reprint of 27? I looked at the catalogues of covers on comics.org, mycomicshop, milehigh, etc., and don’t see this anywhere, but it seemed odd that there’s be no CB version of this sole issue.

    Thanks for any pointers!

  6. Any idea what's going on with this 9.6? There are vertical smudges near the left and right edges of both front and back covers. But they do not seem to be on the outer surface. I can't tell if they are on the book itself or on the inside of the case. It looks like mildew to me. Will a re-holder fix this?

There also seems to be curved very light indents around the entire outer edge of the back cover as shown in the photo annotated in red.

    Thanks for tips!

  7. Any idea what's going on with this CGC 9.6? There are smudges vertically near the left and right edges of both the front and back covers. But they do not appear to be on the outer surface of the case. I can't tell if they are on the book itself (in which case, how on earth is it a 9.6?) or on the inside of the case. Will a re-holder fix this?

  8. Hi, any thoughts on pros and cons of three clear backing board products?  I've searched, including here, and didn't find much.

    https://comic-pro-line.myshopify.com/collections/60-80pt-clear-boards

    https://www.comicclearsupplies.com/shop-comic-clear

    https://comicskin.com/product-category/crystal-clear-backing-boards/

I bought the comic pro line ones, which are very rigid (and seem much less bendable than the other two based on the YouTube videos I found).  But the comic clear product seems to be the same thickness at 80mil (vs 80pt for CPL and no info on the thickness of comic skin).  But the latter two are half the price of the comic pro line, so I was willing to give them a shot but curious if anyone has compared rigidity, archival quality, and clarity.

    Thanks!

I have a very nice Iron Man 55.  Great gloss.  Sharp corners.  Great color.  The problem is that it has some of that blue ink spray along the top edge and bottom edge...Not on the covers...just on the very ends of the book.  And then there are small spots scattered along the spine of the same blue ink spray/spatter.  First question is where did this come from?  Did this occur in printing?  Is this some sort of distribution return practice?  Also, how does this play in to CGC grading?

    Same book as this post?

  10. If anyone happens to have time to point our some of the specific defects that push this to the 8.5-9.0 range, it would be very educational and appreciated!

I'm looking in contrast at the Hulk 181 a few threads up (see link below) with the color breaking spine ticks, color breaking crease at the right side of the front cover, and apparent yellowing around all the edges of the back cover, which came back at a 9.0 and trying to understand what the issues are with this one --

Here, I see the spine splits top and bottom, the spine edge wear which seems to have no grading standards, and some rubbing near the staples on the front cover, and a non-color breaking bend near the middle of the spine on the back.  Did I miss anything big?

The Hulk 181 seems cumulatively and obviously worse than this.

Is there an issue that modern books are graded more harshly?  Or maybe I'm over-penalizing for color-breaking ticks and creases and not enough for spine splits (although you can't see the spine edge on the Hulk photos, so who knows)?  Thanks!!
