  1. I'm about to ship out my comic book over to CGC for grading but I have one concern regarding shipping. Besides shipping with insurance, I want to also require a signature for them to accept the package but would someone be able sign it for it at a PO BOX? Because their address is a PO BOX:

    Certified Guaranty Company, LLC
    P.O. Box 4738
    Sarasota, FL 34230
    United States

Would I only ship to the above address if I'm shipping with USPS?

If I decide to ship with FedEx instead, can I require a signature for delivery acceptance at the below address?

Please use this address if shipping with FedEx or UPS:
    5501 Communications Parkway
    Sarasota, FL 34240

I'm just paranoid that the package would be accidentally delivered to the wrong location or potentially stolen as I can't easily replace this comic book due to its rarity. Any feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks!

  2. I looked on CGC's FAQS and this is what I found:

CGC does not provide insurance for books shipped from its facility to you. CGC urges you to investigate and secure proper means of insuring your books against damage in transit. See policy below:

LOSS OR DAMAGE IN TRANSIT POLICY
Due to their fragile nature, comic books can be damaged while in a CGC holder if improperly handled, stored or displayed. By using CGC’s products / services, you agree that CGC is not responsible for any damage or loss whatsoever occurring during transit to or from CGC’s facility, or thereafter. Any responsibility for risk of damage or loss during transit and thereafter falls to the customer. Unless CGC receives special delivery instructions from you, CGC will return books to you by the carrier of its choice. Note: CGC Dealers are to pick up your books directly at CGC’s facility.

This makes no sense. How am I supposed to insure my comic book in transit back from CGC to me? When I'm checking out for a submission, I see the following options. How much is USPS insuring my package on the way back? How the hell am I supposed to ensure something over $100? I'm not gonna pay to get this graded and pressed if it's a risk, like what kind of is that? Am I missing something?

    Its all kind of subjective.

If cost is a factor to you, then you'd probably hope the increased value in grade will result in a price increase greater than the cost of the pressing.  But then you'd have to have a reasonable estimate of the grade and pricing with and without pressing to compare.  But then to do that you'd have to have at least a basic understanding of the flaws your comic has AND a basic understanding of what pressing can do.

But then you MIGHT also need to factor in the extra time it takes to press too.

Of course you can go as deep as you want into expected values and probabilities, time value of money, of course making sure you factor in all the relevant shipping, grading, insurance, pressing, invoice, packaging and other fees (like if you were shipping internationally).  And then of course EVERYONE's risk preferences and financial situations and collection goals are different, and those might even be different based on whether you intend to sell now or later, etc.  And that's only on your grading side, there might also be a million other factors if you're considering selling.

Of course just like anything else, you will make a better decision the more information and experience you have, and the more time you spend researching for yourself.  Likewise, when you're asking for help, it might make sense for you to provide as much of the above information as possible so some kind soul who wants to help can give you the most informed opinion.

    good luck.

BUT to answer specifically some of your questions:  The book will be graded as any other book, no 'pressed' class, and CGC does not consider pressing to be restoration (assuming you haven't done other restoration).

Also there might be a service you can pay for where they pre-screen your book for defects that might be pressable, so you don't pay full freight if they don't think your book will improve with pressing.

Consider contacting CGC directly and asking customer service to walk you through the process and your options (of course recognizing they are in business to sell these services).

Thanks for the informative response. It's a small 16-page one-shot video game comic. I carefully took a lot at it at eye-level in the light and there isn't many creases/bends. Mostly the ones that are easily visible are along the seam of the back of the book next to the staples. This book is extremely rare, only 100 copies ever printed. There are no financial or time-constraint concerns so I think I should get it pressed since this book is not easy to come by. The pre-screen is an extra $30 so I will just get that as well just in case so I don't overpay for a service that I won't actually get.

  4. I'm about to send in my first comic book to be graded and I see the option that I can also have it pressed. Is this recommended? Since they can remove some imperfections without actually using any restoration on the book, will this increase my grade when they grade it? My book has a few very minor and small bends near the spine but nothing crazy. The book won't be graded in a different category or something if I have it pressed, correct? It would be like any normally graded/sealed comic?

  5. Hey guys, I got a very noob question. I have a comic book that I want to send to CGC to get sealed and graded but their site is telling me I have to become a paid member before I can process a submission? This doesn't make sense to me because there are already fees in place for every submission, why do I need to pay for a membership on top of this? I get video games sealed and graded all the time with VGA and you don't have to be a member for that. I see the cheapest plan to be a paid member is $25 by being an associate but is this a one-time fee for a monthly fee? The paid membership seems like a money-grabber. Can someone explain this to me? I only need to get this one book graded and it's unlikely I'll ever need to grade anything else.
