  1. Why, that's the Canadian version of THIS book:

During World War II American comics, pulps and other non-essential products from non-sterling countries were banned for various economic reasons and then during the last few months of the war and on and off for a period of years after the war the importation of the comics was still not allowed-this also applied to such magazines as "Time" which is why a Canadian edition of this magazine and "Reader's Digest" came into being-so companies that used to publish Canadian comics (called Canadian Whites because they were mostly black and white) began importing printing plates from the U.S. and printing the comics up here for the Canadian market. This didn't just apply to Archie but to other comics as well including a variety of DC titles (I've got a copy of Star Spangled Comics and Mutt and Jeff, both DC titles that were printed up here). These comics weren't published in any particular order either nor were they often exactly the same.

I don't know if their were any Archies published before the American material was packaged but if there was then what happened in that case was the Canadian publisher would buy an American -script for an Archie story and then have a Canadian artist do the artwork. Anglo-American Publishing had such an agreement with Fawcett. At times this lead to some rather interesting Canadian quirks such as Minute Man having a Union Jack emblazened across his chest. 2. POV,

Like almost all of my best finds, this came from a private collector

who wrote to me after seeing my posts here or (in this case) one

of my eBay auctions. Since I scanned in my collection of MM Mags

in the spring, I have gotten several fantastic leads from long time

owners of incredible books. Apparently, after seeing my page these

people sensed my enthusiasm for early Disneys and I suspect that

was a bigger incentive for them than the actual price. This particular

book had been off the market for almost two generations along with

many equally incredible copies that I am getting. The story behind

them is really interesting but unfortunately I promised the seller to

keep it confidential. I just wanted to post a few since I have never

seen books of this caliber before myself - even the set of file copies

    I bought at Sotheby's doesn't come close.

Now, if only a MLJ collector would come forward and do the same for me! You lucky guy you! Absolutely incredible copies of some rarely seen stuff! acclaim.gif

  3. Just bought this today!

This is the very first MLJ comic ever produced! From November 1939. Dealer graded this a Good/Very good. I got a nice deal on it, and I couldn't resist. Anyway, these first issues always are expensive! I'm very glad to have gotten this one out of the way! The coolest thing about it is some pages are black and white only, while others are black, white, and magenta (red), and still others are full color...! cloud9.gif

  4. Oooh....Very spooky! Nazi Monster, a woman being "gassed". Note the word "GAS" etched on the hypodermic needle; this book was on the stands in October 1942, well before the U.S. was aware of what was going on in the concentration camps at that time. Can you imagine seeing this at your local drugstore for .10?
