Well when you think about it, I seen some early Timley’s with this kind of very minor ink dots and glue. If they put it in a PLOD, collectors would probably damage books further by taking chunks out of them just so they can obtain a blue label. I think it has its place if it’s used consistently. My memory is foggy but wasn’t there some controversy with the Larsen MMC#9? Was in a PLOD then they revisited it, put it in a blue label. This was probably 20+ years ago?

HA shows it went from a PLOD 5.0 with glue to a blue 5.5 to a blue 6.0. Not sure what it’s in now 😂  The “88” code for Marvel Mystery was cleaned off as well. The “Larson” was probably cleaned off, unfortunately, before it was first slabbed.

With regards to importance and content, I would agree #33 should be ahead of #29 and #31. But in terms of cover coolness that is iconic to Batman, #29 and #31 blows away #33. And I believe that is the reason #29 and #31 trumps #33 in value.

33 was outpacing the 29/31 at one point. Then the 33 fell behind and even the 35 had higher demand than the 33. 29 and 31 are still neck and neck for me with slight edge to the 31 (just slight). The slight rarity and earlier 29 always is a plus for me. Alas, I’m no longer a Pre Robin Tec owner 🫠

Peter asked for some backstory on these two books. They were part of a Timely lot in the second Sotheby's auction in the early '90's. There were a few other books in the lot - a really nice Amazing Comics #1, a vg Young Allies issue and something else that I can't remember. The lot didn't hit reserve in the auction and was unsold. Jerry Weist, who was overseeing the event, knew I collected Timelys and gave me a call to see if I was interested. I said I was. He said he wasn't allowed to say what the reserve was but I could make an offer. "$1200?" "That a few hundred short and won't quite do it." "$1500?" "That will do it!"

    Good thing you paid up!

One of my favorite Marvel Mystery issues! Way back in the early ‘70’s I got a single front cover from a friend. Amazingly, I found a coverless copy in The Buyer’s Guide which I bought. But I was a struggling college student and had to sell it. I have always regretted it and was never able to get another. So if someone has a copy with a nice detached fc and no bc, it might be my old copy…

The third copy I posted (raw) was such - missing BC but had the FC attached. I got it from Terry O’Neill around 2007-08.
