  1. Thanks alot Angelo....I appreciate your kind words....and i know you love the King too.

Got this one today too from a friend of mine. One of my favorite Bronze horror covers and the highest graded copy. Unexpected 117 in 9.4 with white pages.

  2. One of the toughest Warrens around, only about 1,000 of these made it to the public. I missed one in the marketplace and Shin (who bought it) was nice enough to hook me up with his undercopy. Other than this, I have never seen one for sale.

Brad told me you had gotten one. Nice job, Andy 893applaud-thumb.gif

  3. "Look! Behind us! We're doomed! It's Diablo!"

What can you say to that??!!! Classic!

You just have to "marvel" at how this odd horror stuff somehow turned into Fantastic Four and Spiderman.

    Absolutely! thumbsup2.gif

The pre-here genre was a breeding and testing ground for a lot of ideas that Stan and the others ended up fleshing out later in Marvel's super-hero period.

Tales of Suspense 6 has a great story about "mutants" -- defined in that story as people who have mutated to develop extra powers beyond the scope of normal humans -- and is clearly the prototypical theory for the entire X-Men and mutant mythos of the Marvel Universe!!!! 893whatthe.gif And the main characater who poo-poo's the idea ends being a person with the power to phase through soild objects (hello Kitty Pryde prototype??)

I also loved how many of these monsters were resurrected in the Bronze Age and beyond (Hulk fought the Glob, Zzutak, and others; Xemnu (the Hulk protoype) was a Defenders villain; Fin Fang Foom and Colossus were used in Astonishing Tales; and FFF returned again in Iron Man in the late 200s).

PS: Angelo, that's a nice pickup from Ebay! yay.gif

I really hope Marvel decides to reprint the rest of the pre-hero titles in the Masterwork series. I'd love to read all those prototype stories....and look at the great art, of course.

  4. Thanks, adamstrange. I really enjoy collecting pre-hero comics. The chase is what makes it so fun.

Agreed -- your post reminded me that it's time to scan a book or two. I'll try to get to that this weekend.

Feel free to post as many of your gorgeous White Mountains as you want thumbsup2.gifhail.gif

  5. Thanks, Steve. I worked on this deal for about a month, and they arrived today. Probably it for me for a little while, anyway.

OK, maybe not. I think I keep buying pre-heroes just to bump this thread. Anyway, on the way from Rhino

  6. Posted this one in my thread too. Hope you guys will check out the link if you have never read it before.

This next book is truly special to me. It contains my all-time favorite story. It is "Master Race" by Bernie Krigstein. This was the start of EC's New Direction books and this one was issued without Code approval. Below I have added a link to a website that has posted the story. Simply click on the page once you are done and it will take you to the next. Comics can be a work of high art and this story proves it. Krigstein was a master and a cinematic storyteller of such talent that it would be hard to find a work of comic art that tops this in my opinion.

  7. Thanks alot Angelo.....here are a couple more too.

I posted these in my thread but wanted to post them here too.

Adventures into the Unknown 27 and the second copy I have purchased this year after looking for one for years. This copy presents much nicer than the previous one I posted but I would only grade it about a point and a half higher due to wear on the back. A sharp looking copy nevertheless and once again has the really nice Al Williamson/Roy Krenkel story that the GCDB credits to Frank Frazetta on the pencils. I have to say I agree and think Fritz did the pencils, Al the inks and Roy the backgrounds. I love this pre-code horror cover alot.

Really sweet AITU, Scott. You can't go wrong with a comic that has a cadre of artists like that. thumbsup2.gif
