  1. Like I said on Reddit, you might not like what you hear, but at the least you can trust this crew to offer an honest assessment of exactly what you've got on your hands! It sucks to hear that your book has been 'restored' (likely touched up by some kid 50 years ago lol), but better to know before you try selling it and money is involved... It must be extremely frustrating to receive your book back from CGC after a 6 month wait only to find it's been awarded the dreaded restoration label and you didn't even know that book had been fixed up, and you probably would have been able to sell it for nearly as much in its raw form... Although at least you know it's a likely a purple label example now, rather than paying CGC and waiting a few months to find out! But as has been said, despite the 'defects' it's still a great key Marvel issue from the 60s, and it'll look great in new Mylar! And since it was your dad's book, is there any chance that YOU are responsible for the 'amateur' touch up job? But it seems to be a winner any way you look at it. The book's still worth a few bucks if you end up selling, or since it came from dad's collection it'll be a beautiful way to remember him and your common interests!
  2. Are you suggesting potential 'restoration'? Like someone decided to touch up a few minor white ticks with a turquoise marker? If that's the case you'll be afflicted with the dreaded 'Purple/Restoration' label, which like a Les Paul with headstock repair, tends to automatically cut the resale value in half... If the book has had any touch ups over the years then you might better off just skipping any consideration of having it graded, and resign yourself to just selling it as an extremely well presenting raw copy. And if you received it free and it doesn't exude any sentimental aura, then you'll still be able to get a few bucks or it. CGC is strict when it comes to any form of restoration, but if you're patient you can usually find a collector who's reasonable enough to consider 'restoration' issues according to their specific characteristics, you just might have to be ready to barter Personally I'd be ecstatic to find a key issues I was looking for, and even get a few bucks off because some kid thought it was a good idea to try touching up the colour a bit I wonder if you'd even notice that after the book's been bagged and slabbed? Or since if it's from your fathers collection, then maybe just find a nice DIY slab or 4mm Mylar bag and preserve it for your own personal collection! But DEFINITELY put it in a new bag, that old wrinkled mess isn't doing Spidey any favours! And then you can send us some nice beauty shots when you change bags So was ASM #5 just a random comic? Anything else fun that you might be interested in having graded? EDIT: Sorry I must have missed your post, so you're pops has had comics graded before? What service did he use?
  3. They just stumbled into the forum from Reddit... Give them some time to recover from their ordeal
  4. Looks like he did take a few more close up pics, but can't tell if it's still behind plastic. I'll change my post to just links so as not to confuse things RE: I edited my post, so hopefully the only images showing up automatically in this thread are of the comic under scrutiny And to the book owner, if you have a flat-bed scanner then you can probably just do 2 high res images instead of messing with a camera
  5. And just in case you're not aware, but ebay has this cool function that will show you a list of what recently completed auctions actually SOLD for, not just the 'pie-in-the- sky' price that many people try listing products for... And with a quick search I noticed another example of your book that appears to be in worse condition and recently SOLD for nearly $730 USD! Not sure if you can post links here, but this is the book that actually SOLD for $730 USD: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/m4YAAOSweaResaQk/s-l1600.jpg https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/uO8AAOSw4i5esaRA/s-l1600.jpg Yours seems to have yellowed more over time, and this copy doesn't have any folds, but I'd say the cover on yours would be more desirable? I'm new here too, what's worse, a serious spine tick infestation that could result in complete cover detachement, or a cover that's most major issue is yellowing? So what's preferable, White bright and chewed up, or yellow and otherwise attractive? Is there a technical grading system that covers this, or is it more personal preference?
  6. Looks like you found your way over here from reddit! Apologies that you don't seem to be getting as much attention as I anticipated this crowd would muster for an Amazing Spider-Man #5, but here's a little bump, and I'm sure one of the regulars will chime in with their opinion. Personally, I noticed what appears to be some a small stain from some sort of liquid near one corner of the back cover, and the other corner appears to have been folded, however my amateur knowledge can't determine whether that's the sort of defect that a nice 'steam clean & press could fix? The book definitely seems to 'present' well. And I'd at least suggest transferring into a nice new crystal clear mylar back with a thick acid free back board. For instance I assume the 'wavy' appearance of Dr. Doom is just being caused by wrinkles on the old bag? IF the ebay sales info is accurate, then it could be valued at $1k+, so I'd say it's worth having the book looked at in person by someone knowledgeable AND AND trust worty And just curious how you came into possession of the book? No offense, but it doesn't sound like you're a serious comic book collector :). Just don't take it to a flea market and let anyone take advantage of you! Smart to do some initial research on anything you're not familiar with, but know could be valuable... Of course, more often than not the items DO end up being worthless, but I think you might have stumbled on a little bit more than just a lump of coal with this one
  7. Is that 2 issues of Ramadan? I was happy to find what looks like NM copy of that in my LCS bargain basement recently! Always fun paying $1 for a book with a cover price of $3.95 If I'd just waited until now to buy all my 90s comic books I could have saved a fortune!
  8. Oh, so that's before they switched to using logos for direct market? gotcha, thanks!
  9. Nice, I thought that looked familiar, I just picked up and read ASM #310 recently! Now just to find an extra $50k!
  10. What's with the black 'slash' through the UPC code? I've only seen this a few times, most recently on the Iron Man Demon in a Bottle cover. Were these issues supposed to be sent back for credit and not sold?
  11. Thanks, I guess if I start buying anything higher value then I'll have to demand to have it removed from the bag so I can see the back of the book! They always just look so perfect and shiny in those crystal clear mylar bags
  12. Love this cover too, I picked up the same book along with #27 that has a similar Jim Lee cover. I love picking up these earlier Wolverine books, some of them have amazing covers, but you can still find them in the $5 boxes
  13. As an old rookie at this, what would you say is affecting the grade on this book? Is the rubbed off colour on the back cover the biggest 'problem'? Or the corners not being sharp enough? I actually noticed that the backing board this book came with had some faint 'orange' colouring, which must be ink that rubbed off of the book... Thanks guys, hoping this will help me when I have to pick between multiple copies of the same book next time I visit the LCS
  14. Thanks guys, at least this turned out to be a decent purchase! I just noticed that one of the books I picked up at the LCS on the weekend is one I had already ordered a while ago, so a 2nd issue of Spider-Man #12 showed up in my mailbox today... Hey, I guess everyone needs at LEAST 2 Spider-man #12s.... At least it has wolverine on the cover... dumb. Don't worry, even I won't post that run
  15. This book has always been on my 'maybe' list, but whenever I've checked online the only copies for sale seem to be in the States, and shipping costs have always made me balk and think it's too expensive... Especially since I'm really only interested in the cover, as it combines two of my favourite things; Todd McFarlane and TMNT! Anyway, it was half off sticker price at the LCS, and it looked decent shape so I said what the hell! Anyone here a Flaming Carrot fan? Maybe I'll get lucky and end up digging the story too
  16. I guess a lot of it depends on your age... I was around 10 years old when McFarlane started getting big, so his 'cool' Style over Substance mantra worked GREAT for me! And that's not the worst of it, I was/is also a Liefeld & Lee fan
  17. Thanks guys, I figured those spine ticks would have dropped the grade even more! Guess I need to read up more on exactly which defects and how numerous/severe they need to be to actually affect the final grade. I can definitely live with a 7.5 on this issue though, so that's another off the list! Next up will hopefully be the Chameleon and Lizard covers. And I'm not sure if it was on purpose, but I've been noticing that the composition is actually very similar on ASM #308, 313 & 316? Not that I'm complaining, they all portray great kinetic poses!
  18. A bit underwhelming after noticing #2 and mostly more vintage books being posted recently, but just wondering what people thought of my recent $5 (CAD) box grab to continue filling my McFarlane collection Does anyone else think the Spidey's head looks a bit too 'long' in this drawing? Just odd shadowing I guess, but I always thought he appeared to have a slight 'conehead' here. And I thought I'd remembered this being in FAR better condition than the #320 I posted yesterday, but it's actually not much prettier. And I was just thinking, do Marvel even allow artists to portray smoking in their current books? I know smoking has become incredibly rare in movies, and reserved for period pieces, or sometimes the 'bad' guy is allowed to smoke
  19. Thanks! For some reason I thought that the 4th printing had just been done recently, I didn't realize it was aslo from the 80s.
  20. Is there a FIFTH printing of the original Mirage TMNT #1? I just got back into comics and am crushed that I missed out on the initial release of the 4th printing with the full colour wrap around cover. And now I'm amazed that I'll have to drop $100+ to get a copy of it now! And, is the 4th printing just regular traditional comic book size? I've only seem photos, and it doesn't look like they bothered printing it in the original oversized' magazine' format... When was the 4th printing actually released? And what was the actual price? I assume they didn't retail for the 'cover price' of $1.50? Here's hoping they spike! I was a bit too young for the gritty Mirage books, but this min-series was exactly my speed at the time... Just too bad the books never really became very popular, is that because they're lame 'Arhcie' comics?
  21. I appreciate the sentiment. Obviously this isn't a book that I have any intention of sending to CGC, but I just like to try and find out if I got a good, or at least fair deal, or if I got hosed! I also should have mentioned that the cover has a long vertical crease, but it doesn't break colour and doesn't seem to be visible in the scans. I guess this explains why it was in the $5 (CAD) back-issue boxes, although I also grabbed #325 for the sale deal and it appears to be in much better shape... Oh well, it's not like it's a high dollar book even in mint condition, and at least it presents well in its fresh crystal clear bag so I'm happy with it! Thanks guys, that's one more to check off my McFarlane collection list!
  22. Sorry to bore you guys with the dregs, but I'll try to post something a bit higher end next time, although I always did like that Fritz made the cover and is just hanging out in a trashcan. Picked this up at my LCS without taking a very close look at the condition... It looked nice and shiny in the fresh clear mylar bag, but when I pulled it out to read I noticed it was a bit rougher than I thought. Just been logging my books in CLZ and wanted to set an accurate condition for this issue. Apologies if this puts anyone to sleep
  23. Does massaging the corner with my thumb count as 'restoration'? Thanks again guys, looks like I actually got a decent deal from ebay, they offered me a $10 coupon, so managed to get this including delivery for $12 USD total
  24. Thanks, and yes, if this ever become more in demand issue then a pressing might help. I noticed some of the minor 'creases' had already started to flatten out just after being pressed in the scanner. Thanks, I know it's not a high value book, but just like to know I got a fair deal on it.
