  1. Yeah, looks like it does have a small dent, or are you referring to the darker colouring of the visible page edges?  In the picture of the same area on the back cover you can see that the corner is a bit soft and 'frayed?' 'ticked?" "also folded'?, however the colour of page edges seems fairly uniform along the entire base...  But at a 7.5 I think we can both walk away withought worrying either of us go 'screwed'. :)  Thanks pros!

I'll try and take some scans when I get a chance and see if they reveal exactly what's going on with that corner.

And thanks again guys, when I noticed that 'they' had COMPLETELY altered the colouring on the Digital version of this book I just HAD to get my hands on an original....

Is 300 not the most expensive issue in the McFarlane run?

    Whoops!  You are CORRECT SIR!

I guess I tend to just ignore #300 as if it doesn't exist, since prices for that issue are already more than I'm willing to spend on a single book :)

Although YES, I believe the heirarchy is probably #300, #316,

And, I'm not sure why, but it seems that Todd's SECOND issue #299 tends to sell for more than his inaugural issue #298?  Is there a simple explanation for this?  Is it due to a character appearance, or just supply demand?

    I finally upgraded my 9.0

DAmn, got a link to the 9.0?  And assuming you got rid of the 9.0, or are you keeping both for the collection? :)

And is this the end, or are you still hunting for a better grade? ;)

My evidently rather humble plan is to just to finish out the McFarlane ASM run...  Just not sure if I want to go for an investment grade CGC slabbed #316, or just go the cheaper route and get a decent looking raw set...  Thinking I'll start with my favourite covers, and the most expensive issue (316), and then hopefully it'll also be a good excuse to visit my LCS to fill the rest in from their back-issue boxes, for $5/each if I'm lucky :).  Figure it makes sense to grab my favourites first, and then I'll be in no rush to get the rest...

Or, I could just order them all online right now, likely for the same price, but then, where's the fun in that?  So many problems!

    Get any reply?

And for the whole group, has anyone paid or been invoiced for a 25 book submission in the last couple of weeks? Is $180 indeed what to expect to get books back to Canada from CGC?

I noticed that an LCS now charges $55/each for their lowest tier service of sending books to CGC for you.  And then I laughed when I saw they had bins FULL of CGC slabs for sale, and some were priced LESS than the $55 it now costs just to have it graded/slabbed! :)lol

I haven't done enough research yet, but I think that in many cases it might be cheaper to just buy books that someone else has already paid to get slabbed!  Unless that particular printing has some SERIOUS sentimental value ;)

I've also never understood autographs, I understand that the CGC SS service seems to seriously increase the value of a book, but I always thought that signatures were a bit pointless unless it's a souvenir of when YOU actually met the celebrity and got their autograph...  And has anything changed with Selfie culture?  Is it just as good to get a photo of you with the artist holding the book!?!?! :)

  5. Just picked this up locally.  Most significant flaw I can see is the colour breaking of the tiny bend on the back cover corner...  And spine tick near the top left price box, and possibly another tick near the bottom left logo box?  I'll throw up some scans if the pics aren't good enough ;)  TIA!  Figure noboday can really get enough of this cover, next on my radar is ASM #316 ;)

Mostly bought it to read so not sure I'm even considering a slab, but just don't want to lose out if I'm ever forced to unload it ;)

  6. This reminds me of when I was convinced that the 'special collectors edition GOLD COVER' (2nd print) variant of New Mutants #87 was the hot book of the month, and SURE to be worth a fortune in the future..

Good luck everyone, but I've just been having fun buying back issues at my LCS of stuff I missed for less than cover price;)

  7. The question is, why are you even interested in having this slabbed?  Does this particular copy have some special sentimental value?

It looks like you can can EASILY get CGC 9.8's of the Magneto variant on ebay for $60, which is probably close to what you'd end up paying to send your copy to CGC for grading, only to wait 6 months and end up getting back a 9.2 graded slab?

I actually just had to wade through stacks of NM looking copies of this cover in my LCS's bargain basement last weekend, so it seems the only examples that have any value at all must be the slabbed 9+ CGC examples...

  8. I always have to laugh at this cover though...  It looks like Iceman is attacking Magneto by throwing snoballs at him?  And Jean Grey just looks like she's on a runway modeling her new costume! lol  And of course there's an angel weilding a bazooka, and old 'human' Beast swinging from some unidentified metal? anchor looking thing lol.

    The good old days :)

  9. Thanks guys! Friend of mine picked it up for $50, but just thought I'd try and get some input from the 'pros' before I have to break it to him that it probably wasn't quite an unbelievable find, and he likely paid about what it's worth :)lol

Well, at least he can read it without concern of inflicting further damage, and this appears to have been read a few times :)

And who knows, maybe the 'Reliced' Electric Guitar craze will make it to comic books, and people will start paying extra for copies that are well loved, with wear 'damage' in all the right spots haha!

Hulk 340 came out before Marvel was computer-coloring, so any reprint or digital edition would have been recolored (

That seems to make sense, I'll buy that explanation, thanks!

So, is this just ONE MORE reason to collect the original books, I've heard that major colouring alterations have been made to a few other books (Conan) when they were recoloured to be reprinted in the 'digital age'

Digital is where I get off the bus.
They can find a new generation to fleece with that.
If I can't hold it then I don't want it.

And what are the 'official' sources to obtain digital copies of Marvel back issues?  I found the amazon thing comixology, but they only seem to offer select issues... For instance I have a physical copy of ASM #320, but wanted to t read the rest of the 6 part 'Assassination Nation Plot', but digital copies of ASM #321-326 don't seem to be listed on the website?

I will only buy a new comic for speculation. Those things aren't worth $41. Speculation. 2. Have it just to have it, maybe like the artwork or story or character. I want the physical copy. If I only wanted to read it I would but wouldn't pay to.

I couldn't believe it when I found out how much NEW comic books sell for these days!  I guess kid's allowances must have gone up  A LOT in the past 20 years...

Luckily, I discovered that I'm mostly a fan of Cover Art, so I've just been finding framed cover art for $2 each!  I mean, I don't really care about reading Hulk 340, but damn is it a pretty cover!

So, is there any reason the digital covers are different?  Was this Hulk example just a mistake, or are they changing digital art on purpose?

  13. How many of the digital editions have had the art modified from the original print editions?  I assume this has been discussed before, but I just noticed that, for instance, the cover art of Incredible Hulk 340 is a bit different in the digital edition available on the Marvel website than it was in the original print edition.  It appears that the digital edition has added or widened the white 'glistening' colour on some of the claws, while the original art on the print cover had the Hulk's reflected face visible across the entire width of each claw.  Is the version on the website from a omnibus release or something, or is Marvel just making random changes?

I haven't made a point of searching for alterations, but does anyone know if it's common for Marvel to make minor changes to the digital edition artwork?  Or are these 'director's editions or something?  Hope the pictures are ok, I just found them on google images, if they're for sale then I'm not affiliated...

  14. I assume that this is a universal issue common to every book that's graded and encapsulated for eternity...  So, since GGC is analyzing the book anyway, I'm surprised they can't offer a service to record an image of each page of the book, and include a digital .pdf copy or something along with the slab?

I guess there would likely be copywrite problems, but am I the only one who thinks it would be cool to get a code to download a digital copy of your encapsulated book?  You know, just in case you ever want to read one of the books again, and for most older books I assume that no official digiital versions even exist!

But I suppose its all because people will pay it, like anything else.

And I've heard that the registration numbers are assigned so that CGC will eventually be able to start taking a percentage from every subsequent sale of the book.  These books are only valuable thanks to being certified by CGC right?  So CGC is obviously entitled to a cut of all future profits gained as a result of their grading service, I mean it just makes sense! ;)

    9.2 or higher

If graded this book might as well come back as 9.8, you never know. (thumbsu

    Thanks!

I guess it's really just the question of whether I want to wait 6 months and spend $50+ to potentially get this copy back as a 9.8, or just drop $100-$150 on a buyitnow auction for a professionally evaluated CGC 9.6-9.8...  And then hopefully get a few bucks for this raw copy...

    Decisions Decisions!

  17. I've been interested in getting a few of the 'old' books from my collection with my favourite covers slabbed. However, since I've learned how unlikely it is for books to achieve a 9.6+, and these aren't extremely 'key' issues, it probably doesn't make financial sense for me to send my original copies in to CGC to be slabbed and graded...

So, what seems to make more sense is to SELL my original RAW books, and purchase another copy of the book that's already been slabbed and awarded a guaranteed quality rating ;)

So, starting with this beautiful McFarlane creation including two if his most iconic Marvel characters, what grade would you feel is accurate if you were to see this book listed for sale in it's current raw state?

    TIA!

  18. I'm not sure if this is the correct thread, but can anyone help me get my head around the pricing that I see on Ebay?!?!

I recently went on ebay and looked up a few of the old books I bought when I was a kid in the 90s to see if they were actually worth anything, and I've noticed some HUGE variations on asking prices...

For instance, I've seen  CGC 9.8 graded copies of a book listed at over $200, and then other listings of what appears to be the same book in similar raw condition that are listed for say $20...

For instance I just looked up Uncanny Xmen 282, and I see a CGC 9.8 with an asking price of $230, but I also see other raw examples that appear to be in similar condition listed for under $20...

So, are there just a lot of "Pie in the Sky" Ebay sellers that are hoping to find some unsuspecting customer willing to drop $200 for a guaranteed already graded 9.8 example of a book?  Or are there some specific variants that I'm not noticing that would make 1 example worth over $200, while another similar example can be had for 10X less?  Or does CGC grading really make your book worth TEN TIMES what it would sell for in a raw state? :)

And I've noticed the same trend with multiple titles, so just wondering if I'm missing something, or if these are just sellers hoping to find someone willing to overpay?

Thanks!  Happy I found somewhere I can get honest insight into this scene that I've been away from since the late 90s...
