  1. here's a really old picture of a girl reading newspaper comics. the spencer family of pittsburgh pa april 1903 a pic of a kid reading marvel mystery #17. the book has been well read. note the top spine is split and tears at the staples. did this book survive?
  2. FYI from the lodi news-sentinel 5/15/73 and publicity from that sale brought out a detective 27 & whiz 2(#1) (1/4/74)... how times have changed now when people back then believed those were crazy prices paid for comic books! robert beerbohm recollects the events...
  3. I believe this was shown before but can't be sure. Second shelf from the floor on the back, second or third comics from the left is this Raggedy Ann & Andy, issue # 10 - that's a good spot scrooge. i think i see on the bottom row: superman 45, thrilling 59, true comics 54, terry & the pirates 3...wonder 11, zoot 6 second row: police 65, patches 7, raggedy ann & andy 10, real life 38, rusty 12, patsy walker 10, picture stories from american history 3, super magician 56, sensation 64, real screen comics 11, star spangled 67, shadow 72 from early 1947. i haven't figured out what the girl is reading though. anyone recognize the other comics? j
  4. anyone seen this pic yet? it has pulps & comics. "little girl & her dog in newstand" by Charles Harris. i believe this was taken in Pittsburgh since the photographer worked for the Pittsburgh Courier.
  5. another article from the milwaukee journal 7/8/66. oh the horror of burning a thousand comics! but how many people would want books possibly contaminated with polio virus? however infection can only occur if the virus is ingested. oh oh amateur restoration though... notice that these older articles include the home addresses of people in the article.
  6. well, many of keyes books have a severe spine roll and the superman 1 probably wasn't worth that much back then... was a $1000 for the first 16 superman books back then a fair price? j
  7. did a quick google search & came up with this article from (GAtor territory?) the Daytona Beach Morning Journal from 10/29/66 titled: There's gold in those comic books. anyone heard of this guy? j
  8. billy those are really nice marvel mysterys! i have a question on your marvel mystery 84. my copy and the few that i've seen have only one staple but yours has 2 staples. is that a rare version or are both versions common? j
  9. fortunately donald's atom bomb has been reprinted a couple of times in the carl barks library (1990) and in wd comics & stories #571 (1994) but i don't remember what was censored. very cool premium! j
  10. you are correct! all those books contain neal adams interior artwork. however the other books i'm missing are oaaw 240 and weird war tales 8 which contain adams artwork. i believe adams only did the cover of gic 168. oaaw 186 & 240, ssws 134 & 144 were reprinted later. j
  11. back to some scans of books. i got the oaaw's earlier this year. here's a relatively easy trivia question...what do all of these books have in common? knowing that relationship, name another dc war book that would belong in this group. those books are next on my list to get. j
  12. a lower grade copy of war 22 with a krigstein story. j
  13. my unpopular book...i found this in a bargain bin for peanuts. i don't know how this series lasted so long with unfunny stories. the only humorous thing is the title of the paul bunyan story... if only the cover was related to the stories inside... j
  14. thanks adamstrange here's a book i got recently for 50 cents in a used book store. i guess 3-d effects was a big fad briefly in the early 50s from movies to comics. i've seen other books from this period with simulated 3-d where backgrounds were drawn in perspective and figures and objects were drawn extending out from each panel. the frank bolle art is very nice. any other 3-d collectors out there? j
  15. fc1186- typical jack davis art but with bland jokes. j
  16. i'm surprised this wasn't posted yet. i hope people don't mind too much if i post a few of my less than perfect books. amazing collection bullet123! j
  17. This is such an underappreciated run for exactly that reason. Maybe it is too eclectic for most people's tastes, but that is one of the draws for me. I am scanning my books currently so I will add as I go along. i love the variety of the four colors. thanks for sharing scans of your collection! j
  18. are we going in numerical order? so the next book would be fc 51...
