Since the rule is to NOT allowed to discuss the book at all, I was torn between 1.5 to 3.0 for Horrific #3 and that tape obstructed all defects. Three extra staples made me think of the spine is split by half or more so I gambled 1.5 on this book. I knew 50/50 chance of blowing it or getting a pure luck. It's a terrible choice of that book for this last round.
Agreed. The only way to get an accurate grade on a book like that, other than pure luck, is to have it in hand and examine the spine for splitting. Obviously the grade would vary for all of us depending on whether the spine was completely split compared to no splitting at all. The tape made that assessment impossible. Not a very good choice for a scan grading contest imho, but what the heck do I know...

Right there with you..I completely missed the tear and crease on the Avengers 7 and blew it by 4 grades... close on the other four with one bullseye, but the Avengers destroyed my score this round.
Thanks again to Mike and CGC for a great time! Always enjoy these contests.
Side note: You'd have to threaten me with a horrific death to agree with 3.0 on the masking taped Horrific. Can't see it at all. The spine could be 100% split under that awful looking tape job. I thought 2.0 was generous...

While I agree with this aspect of your assessment, I still believe that "moving on" is the less problematic path. These contests are intended to be entertaining (as opposed to "life changing"). We're being asked to predict CGC grades based on very limited data (namely, two flat scans). As far as I'm concerned, the fact that we're not able to examine a "live" specimen up close means that the data upon which we base our grade will ALWAYS be incomplete. Irritating? Perhaps, but only at the same level as, say, a hangnail.
I judged the ASM #38 to be a 6.0 with no suspicion that the interior was stained. In other words, I don't think this particular hidden and undisclosed defect affects the book's grade. However, as I mentioned a few pages back, I did get crushed on the HOS #92 (my 7.5 vs CGC's 5.5 -- my first-ever four grade increment whiff ). Once Mike posts the full Round 2 grade distribution data, I think we'll see that most of the more experienced participants made comparable judgments.
A do-over will set a precedent that we will absolutely, positively come to regret at some point down the road. Trust me on this.
I had the same grades as you on the ASM 38 and HOS 92, and agree with your assessment on both. I also don’t think I’ve missed a grade by 4 increments before either. Heck, I still don’t see staining on the HOS 92…
We all had the same info going in, so put me in the camp for no do-over. It should be interesting to see the results as is.

Yeah, who am I kidding, they were all pretty tough. I’ll probably get my worst score ever…

Grades in. One book was particularly difficult for me. Interested to see what everyone else thought on it.

2023 CGC Grading Contest Summer Edition (#7) Round 4
in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?

I’d argue you used logic and experience here, not stupidity. How many times have you seen a raw book with a fully taped spine that had no spine splitting? It’s rare in my experience. The tape is usually there to repair a split spine and added staples to reattach the cover.
