And then there were the times you didn't have a dime to spend at the newsstand and you turned to
the corner store with the cardboard box at the far end of the counter that contained a whole other
category of collectibles for sale...The Remainder Comic. Hey it was only a comic book you were
buying to read, not enshrine...and it only cost a NICKEL.
My neighbor while growing up worked at a distribution center and would give me remainder comics.

I started out on primarily Batman and the DC war books. One day I saw Amazing Spider-Man #3 and that was it. Became a Marvel Zombie. I loved Spidey, FF4, Hulk, and X-Men. Bought every one on the stands. Never had any love for Thor though. Still bought the DC Bat and war titles but the Marvels and of course MAD magazine got the most of my spending money.
of course Mad

Thanks for posting. Really interesting. Are there other examples of similar stolen comics?

Hi. I removed these from their slabs and will include the label with the sale- these are raw comics. Feel free to PM me if you would like a book re-slabbed and we can discuss.
Since the Red Raven is not super high grade and MP, it’s fun to read without worrying about losing lots of money. And the stories are quite interesting! Definitely not high-brow literature. An early Timely/Simon/Kirby classic!
Daredevil Comics #1 has the centerfold trimmed- I attached photos so you can see that. I placed a piece of white paper between trimmed and untrimmed pages so you can see the defect. No other restoration. Classic cover!
Usual rules apply. No HOS. Since these are raw, buyer can return them within one week after receiving it, in the same condition.
First in the thread or via PM gets the book.
Red Raven Comics #1 CGC 7.5 MP de-slabbed. Asking $4650. GPA reports an 8.0 EA sold for $4375 in November, 2019.
Daredevil Comics #1 Apparent centerfold trimmed de-slabbed asking $4250.
Payment via PayPal. Feel free to make offers!
Thank you for looking!

I remember going to the local stationery store while in elementary school in the late 70's and buying FF's and X-men. Then started buying them at the new "comic dealer" at the flea market. I was introduced to Marvel around 5th grade. Prior to that I liked Richie Rich, Archie, and Superman. Once I discovered Marvel, it was all over for the others. I don't recall any specific issues though. I liked them all but none really stood out. I don't think any of those issues turned out to be true "keys" although the whole Byrne X-men run occurred at that time. I loved reading Origins and Sons of Origins of Marvel Comics, and Jules Feiffer's The Great Comic Book Heroes. I remember being so happy discovering someone who had Silver Surfer comics and they actually agreed to sell a few to me. Then I traded some of those for an X-men 1. Still have that all those books. The X-men 1 probably grades 1.5-1.8 but it's complete and I still love reading it.

Does anyone know of any firsthand accounts of purchasing from the newsstand at the time of publication and reading golden age keys like action 1, detective 27, marvel comics 1, etc? Are these accounts written anywhere, or recorded? I am reading “All in Color for a Dime” where one author recounts his friend buying Whiz #2 (1) off a newsstand and reading about Captain Marvel.

I like this idea. I would see it! I never really thought about a Stan Lee movie until reading this thread. I would also like a movie about Bill Gaines. So much interesting material, particular in the 50's with the cultural shift to horror comics, the Senate hearings, the death of horror comics, the near-death of EC, then the rise of Mad.

I love these early Actions- especially the non-Superman covers. Really deep in the evolution of the comic book. And coincidentally a bit more affordable! 18 was one of the first books I bought after getting back into collecting years ago- bought from Metro. 15 I bought raw on eBay back in the day when you could find great deals. Here are mine:
- SuperBird, Buzzetta, Gotham Kid and 3 others

Congrats on the Cap 1. Great price too! I thought it would go higher.

Obama gives a great speech eulogizing John McCain and paraphrases the final panel of AF 15 at two minutes into the video here.
According to google Stan Lee did not originate the idea of the phrase “with great power there must come - - great responsibility!” but I think he certainly put it into pop culture and more common usage.

The list isn't bad; personally I'd rank Marvel #1 a little lower, and I'd rank All-American #16, Flash #1, MF #52, and Whiz #2 much lower.
I would would rank those books very high since we all know those stories. I would say most comic collectors know the stories in those books, compared to books like action 7, Tech 31, MF 73. I can recognize those covers, and I know MF 73 has 1st appearances, but I still don't know those stories. I have known the stories of the former comics since as long as I have collected. I think the interior story content of AA 16, Flash 1, MF 52 and Whiz 2 elevates them to the highest tier of GA comics (along with of course Action 1, Det 27.)

I will definitely buy your book at my LCS! Topic is very timely as our country faces an epidemic from opioids. CDC reports increasing numbers of death by opioids, both prescription and heroin, over past 20 years since the introduction of Oxycontin in 1997. Unfortunately, the new epidemic is much more real than the fears of Marihuana (as one of the comics spelled it.)

The Pay copy 9.0 went for $205k 10 years ago on Heritage. I wonder what that would go for now? Stock market Dow Jones Industrial avg years ago was around 13-14k- right before crash. I think the Marvel comics 1 would have been a better investment, even if you bought stocks at the lowest point of the crash (around DIA around $7k.) And even if the DIA did better than MC #1, if you bought the MC 1 you would at least have the comic! Much better than the stocks.

Crazy pants comic purchases; what's your's?
in Golden Age Comic Books

I purchased this when I returned to collecting around 2007. At the time it was a HUGE amount to pay for a comic. I remember buying it in the for sale section on ComicLink - not from an auction. I have since spent more than this on a book but this was the first big purchase for me. When I was a kid I could never imagine owning a copy of Plastic Man’s origin! And I did crack the slab to read it!
