  1. Hi all,

Hoping to get some impressions on this book.  Nothing unusual, but it has a collection of defects that I don't quite know how to sum-up.  FC is unremarkable, impacted bottom right corner.  BC has a few marks and a small stain, a 1/4" tear on leading edge, and a faint ~3" color-breaking crease top left corner.  Interior is clean...no surprises.

    Thanks!

I agree with your assessment about there being damage to the paper. The back also looks a little discolored. Just based on the bends, I'd set the upper limit at 6.5. If anything on the back is deemed staining, it could go lower, otherwise 6.5. Given the nature of the bends, this would look nice in the slab if you can live with the grade. The bends will probably be mostly, or completely invisible through the plastic unless you really look hard.

Agreed about the presentation. The discoloration on the back is not a stain from the outside world, it’s bleed through from the color advertisement on the last page.

  3. Hi all.  Here is a nice vibrant copy of X-Men 101.  Primary issue is two subscription-like creases running nearly parallel down the front, one down the back.  Of the creases on the front, one is maybe 6", the other almost book-length (ditto the one on the back).  These creases only break color in two areas, about 1cm length each.  I'm not sure how to assess the effect of non-color-breaking creases, which is how I would characterize these.  I have pressed the book but the creases remain, suggesting that there is actual damage to the page fibers even though there isn't evident color loss.  Any thoughts would be appreciated!

  4. Hey all,

Interested in your thoughts on this one.  Tight binding, nice colors and gloss on cover, good spine.  Issues are some moisture staining on the top FC and BC (and some discoloration along the leading edge FC).  There is some writing in ink on the bottom FC and on the BC, and some light writing indentations on the FC (visible in third photo below, just above yellow box).  1/2" tear on BC.  Thanks!

    From a comic grading company...

"Look at the placement of the staples on the comic when looking at mis-wraps vs. spine rolls. Mis-wraps, the staples will be where their supposed to be but the cover is not aligned. A spine roll has all the pages of the book shifted, the spine itself has shifted, placing the staples on top of the book or the bottom of the book."

Either way, IMO... "it dramatically affects the aesthetic appeal of the book"

Agreed.  Looking more closely, it's not a miswrap, but the it's also not a typical spine roll either, as the book lays flat.  Essentially, it looks like it was "re-creased" for some reason causing the pages to splay out.  I'm in the process of trying to press it out.  We'll see what happens.  Thanks for the input!

I do not know if that is a bindery defect or a severe spine roll/fanned pages, either way it dramatically affects the aesthetic appeal of the book, along with moderate edge/corner wear with color breaking creases, minor to moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine ticks, moderate color rub on front cover under the "EN" in "X Men".

    IMO...

5.5 FINE- (FN-):  Back to Top
Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.

    5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN):  Back to Top
An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.

Thanks.  Just to clarify, it's not a spine roll, it's a miswrap.
