"Dry Erasure Marks" / CGC grading

6 posts in this topic

How does CGC treat the possible evidence that the back cover has had some erasure used on it ?.It is difficult to tell, but a looked at a book that looked extraordinarily clean on the back and was not as shiny?...but then again ..it was hard to tell!......THX....in advance....BH

I think CGC will downggrade for damage done to a book if the dry erasing was excessive and damages the book.

Regarding your book, the whites may be clean but soiling may remain on the inks.

Look inside the text boxes and interior closely. Then again you just might have a really clean book with little gloss due to how it was stored over the years.

Hope this helps, as you said its hard to tell.

Thanks for the response,....this post sat out there for awhile.....it didn't appear to be damage...but I was curious anyway!...also, I have a key book in good condition ,except one line on the BC that is slight pencil or dirt...and it is soooooo tempting to just "brush" it off!...but as I have seen over and over again....the motto is ..just DON'T TOUCH IT!....curious though b/c I don't believe they treat that as resto.??....but its hard to keep up w/ all the nuances of resto, preservation etc....

When you mean good condition are you talking about a technical grade, 2.0-2.5?.. or just that the book is in good condition? Because if the books already beat up I dont think erasing a pencil mark will greatly affect the book eitherway, nor really help for that matter.

I will assume you mean it is a nice book and the pencil line stands out badly?

If the book looks like it has some sort of a newstand marking there would be no real downgrade at all as most/many books have them even in very hi grades. I've had some terrific books with grease pencil, pen and stamp markings and CGC did not downgrade for any of them. If it looks like a child's scribble, it'll be downgraded accordingly. I've never tried it but from what i hear dry cleaning when done right is not an issue with CGC. Ruining the book is. Also, you may still have an indent from the pencil lead pressure in the book after you "erase" it which would need a pressing. Again, not resto but nonetheless a concern for most.
