A nice strong light source you can hold the book up to and see the opaque color touch areas through the cover! Not high tech, but pretty effective. A really srtong magnifier is cool, too, because as you look really close to the paper, like what an ant would see walking over a cover, the dots are really abstract, and the paper is all raggy and kinda scary looking....not flat and shiny anymore. And you see that the cover artwork youve been admiring all these years is actually dried globs of ink splatters sitting precariously on flaky, rough, porous pressed pieces of flattend dried wood pulp. Even sharp corners look grossly misformed. And Im describing HIGH GRADE books.
