CGC seems to go a little easier on square bounds.

 

Yes, it does seem this way because many of the squarebounds rolled off the presses with glue ripples and small spine tears. The different way these books are bound simply make them more prone to these issues.

 

Also...

 

Bear in mind that as paper ages, it expands and contracts with the storage conditions, humidity, etc. The glued spine affixes the paper in place, so where it is glued, it cannot expand and contract like the rest of the paper on the book. The result? Even more ripples along the spine.

 

You don't see this on stapled books because the paper is allowed to expand and contract equally. Nothing is affixed in a stationary position.
