Bat-Books, incl Detective 398, 408, 411 + Now some higher grade 1980s books

31 posts in this topic

Starting out with Bronze Age Bat-books (Detective Comics and the main Batman title). This will gradually move forward to some Moderns. Depending on the level of interest I might put up a few Silver Agers as well.

PayPal is great-- if you prefer to send a check or MO and you're inside the USA, that's cool also.

I can ship up to 5 books US Priority Mail for $4.60. After 5, please add 50 cents per book, not to exceed a maximum of $8.95 for flat-rate priority mail shipping. If you manage to fill up a priority mail flat rate cardboard box (specifically, 50 regular-sized comics) I'll pay US shipping.

International orders will use the Global Priority flat rate envelope, so 5 can go to Canada for $8.55, to the UK for $10.45, etc. International buyers of more than 5 books? We'll need to talk...

Throw a :takeit: up and make sure you specify which book you're taking, and it's yours.

First up is Detective Comics 395, the initial outing of the Denny O'Neil - Neal Adams creative team. The Robin backup story features great Gil Kane/Murphy Anderson artwork.

Comic is in Very Good Plus condition, with color loss on front cover and a major ink smudge on the back. In addition, the lower staple is popped. Yours for $8. Reduced to $5

I bought this one from a well-known national dealer, advertised as "VF/VF- 7.8." :gossip: I'd call it FN/VF. Nice Neal Adams front cover with a couple of imperfections obvious in the scan, but unfortunate foxing on the left edge of the back cover. :( Take it away for $15.

Mike Kaluta cover. Inside, a Denny O'Neil scripted mystery, with longtime Bat-artist Irv Novick pencilling. Unusually, it is Murphy Anderson who inks Novick this time out. This structurally beautiful book is in Very Fine condition, but note the tanning covers. Selling for $8. Price Reduced to $6

Detective Comics 437 VERY FINE MINUS Your Price $9 Price Reduced to $7.50

Besides a classic retro-Golden Age cover by Jim Aparo, this issue features the very first Bat--script by long-time Warren and Marvel writer/editor Archie Goodwin, who assumed the editorship of this title beginning in this issue. Aparo drew the Batman story in this issue, his first outside of Brave & Bold. But the real highlight of the issue is the inaugural episode of the Goodwin / Walt Simonson Manhunter strip. Great Issue!

Kaluta cover. Aparo art on Batman. This is also a sequel of sorts to the first Batman/Ras al Ghul confrontation. Second installment of the Goodwin/Simonson Manhunter. And a shame about the bottom right hand corner. VG Minus and $5. Price Reduced to $2.00

I believe this is the last of the Neal Adams covers for Detective Comics. The story is Steve Englehart's first contribution to Batman continuity. Simonson/Goodwin Manhunter part 3. And some great reprints as well. This is in Fine Minus condition-- spine and corner wear as shown in the scan. $9.00 Price Reduced to $7.50

Probably the best combination of new stories / reprints in the 100 Page Super Spectacular series. Death of the Simonson/Goodwin Manhunter (and the first time Simonson draws Batman). This copy presents well, but has some moisture damage, slight rippling of front cover. Call it Fine Minus and $6.00. price reduced to $5.00

Last of the 100-Pagers. New story by Denny O'Neil and Irv Novick/ Giordano. Reprints include a Jerry Robinson story. This is a nice issue, I'd say Very Fine Minus: there's a chip out of the lower spine, and that's some very slight distributor overspray at the top near the middle-left. $10.

One of the odder Bob Haney - Jim Aparo B&B teamups, but it works... I think. This copy is in FN/VF condition, note the dings at the various corners, and the date stamp. For sale at $4.
