thanks for the stats rip, but i was talking about sales overall, not just 9.4's.

Definitely, and I can remember Ricky flipping some mid-grade book for double what he paid, same week! I've been following the CGC 6.0-9.2 section, and it's down bigtime from X-hype maximums.

I have two comments abot maybe why this book sold for so low:

(1) sucky pic - even with the enlargement, it's still pretty small

(2) the red looks a tad faded

Come on! That's actually quite a deep red compared to those pumpkin-colored CGC 9.4-9.6 copies I keep seeing. 893frustrated.gif

I just wish someone would get a 9.8 on a Spotlight 5 so the 9.4 prices would become affordable.

What's the future hold for this book?

Is there tons of ungraded booty out there?

Somehow, I doubt it on Spotlight 5. boo.gif

ISomehow, I doubt it on Spotlight 5. boo.gif

One more time for the peeps:

I have seen mass HG quantities of every single Marvel Bronze Key, with the noted exception of Iron Man 55. This was due to its "key issue identification" coming incredibly late, during the Thanos Quest/Infinity hype of the early 90's, it was a "hidden 1st app.", and the fact that few people even knew it was Thanos's first appearance. In the 1980's, many assumed Captain Marvel 26 was his debut...

Other than that, quantities exist, especially of the heavily promoted first appearances in the try-out mags, like Iron Fist, Ghost Rider, Shang-Chi, etc.

I've seen lots of Spotlight 5 but the book was always a tough one to get in high grade.

If I had to pick the most common book I've seen in high grade out of all of the bronze age keys believe it or not it would be have to be the first Sabertooth, IF 14. I've seen large back issue supply bags full of copies above VF.

I saw a guy at a late-80's Canuck Con, who had immense supplies of the "first appearance" 70's try-outs like Marvel Premiere 15, Marvel Special Edition 15 and Marvel Spotlight 5, among many others.

We forget that these books were the big news of the 70's and dealers were speculating like mad. I'm certain that with all these insane sales taking place, a few of them are madly submitting as I type.

Now I'm referring to CGC 9.4 and above copies, and not the elusive High-QP copies. Then again, that horribly-miscut one just went for $1K+, so I doubt that's an issue for the newbie buyers.

Just look at the number of X-Men #94's in 9.6 that have been creeping up recently, and you'll get your answer. Also, look how long, and how many submissions it took for an ASM #129 to get a 9.8. But it happened, and I'm willing to bet it will happen again.

So when I see crazy money being paid for a 9.4 of any bronze key, I find myself hoping that the buyer is a true collector and intends to keep the book for their collection, not someone who hopes to profit.

Joe, one of the reasons why I collect DC and golden age books is because in the early 90's I started working for a large dealer. I would do grading and fill out mail orders. I collected Marvel and DC both heavy. But after a few weeks it was really heart wrenching seeing stacks of large supply bags full of almost every Marvel post 66-67 silver age comic. We never had very many X-men 94's above VF or very many Marvel Team ups 1 above F. But for the most part we (I guess I should say they) had dozens of copies of most everything. Afterwords I turned to golden age collecting and DC silver/bronze. I still love collecting Marvel but I haven't put big dollars into them since.

I'll still buy them under guide and I still do pick up high grade issues from time to time.

Anyway, I'm not saying there are tons of 9.4's out there on every Marvel book...but if I were a investor/speculator I wouldn't collect anything under 9.2.

To make the story more balanced, resently I helped move boxes and have noticed how picked over they have become. Just resently I looked for ASM 194. Everyone of them was gone. There must of been 50 last I remember. The key books have for the most part been picked over. Will the incredible demand stay above the large supply, who knows?

Yes, the CGC Buying Frenzy will buck the trend and become the only fad in the history of mankind that continues on forever. 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif
