This Week Back From CGC

17,956 posts in this topic

Got back today the remainders from a 48 book value tier submission. They came with two good pieces of news:

(1) nary a PLOD or GLOD in the lot

(2) the call from CGC asking for more scratch to cover the 14 books that graded outside the tier :headbang:

For those of you who like to keep score on re-submissions, there were 6 repeats among the 48. Two received a higher grade, two stayed the same, and two received a lower grade. Results like these are consistent with the concept that, owing to the inexact art of grading, comic book grades are plus or minus one grading unit.

These were the bump-ups from the value tier:

Tales of Suspense #64 cgc 9.4 ow/w :acclaim:

Tales of Suspense #88 cgc 9.4 ow/w

Tales of Suspense #90 cgc 9.4 ow/w

Tales of Suspense #93 cgc 9.4 ow/w

X-Men #19 cgc 9.2 w

X-Men #29 cgc 9.2 ow/w

X-Men #33 cgc 9.2 w

X-Men #38 cgc 9.2 ow/w

X-Men #43 cgc 9.4 c/ow

X-Men #48 cgc 9.4 w

X-Men #65 cgc 9.4 ow

Captain America #117 cgc 9.2 ow

Incredible Hulk #108 cgc 9.4 w

Avengers #55 cgc 9.4 w

If I may ask, what did you have these graded at? Looks like they were all easily well over the $100 threshold for the value tier.

BTW sweet books!!

Just got the grades from a 20 piece submission I sent in last month. These all came from the 3000 piece original owner collection I will have for sale at Chicago next week. Will receive this batch next week and will all be available for sale at the show. Pretty happy with the results:

Pre-graded all books at 9.8, a few misses but most were right on :headbang:

All have WHITE PAGES!!!!

Batman 368 9.8

405 9.0 doh!

407 9.8

426 9.8 :applause:

427 9.6 :)

Killing Joke 2 copies both 9.8 :headbang:

Detective 542 2 copies 9.4, 9.6 (no registered GPA sales :o:grin:)

Secret Wars 8 9.8

Ronin 1 9.8

2 9.8

3 9.6

5 9.8 (thumbs u

Silver Surfer vol. 3 1 4 copies all 9.8

Spider-Man vs. Wolverine 1 (1987) 9.8

Watchmen 2 9.6 (shrug)

All in all, 14 out of 20 in 9.8. Was REALLY hoping for the Bats 427 to hit the mark, but it fell just short :insane:. But, if this is any indication of the quality of the collection, some deals are to be had on the remaining books come next week!!

I didn't worry too much about whether the books at my assigned grades were valued at close to $100 or a bit over. I also didn't worry too much about whether I thought a book was a 9.2 or a 9.4, or another was a 9.0 or a 9.2 - my grade matches the one from CGC only a fraction of the time anyway. Indeed, an old CGC grade matches a new CGC grade only a fraction of the time (although usually at a higher rate than with this sub). It's easier to let the grades fall where they may, and let CGC charge me accordingly. Looks like McMiles did the same with his recent value tier sub as well, which had a slew of books valued at way over $100.

The one that was bumped all the way from Value to Standard tier is the TOS64. I cracked this years ago out of an old blue label 9.2 ow. The rest of the bumps were up to Economy.

I don't really concern myself with the grades or value either. For me, the time isn't usually a big deal, so I don't mind waiting and paying more after the fact if a book gets bumped to the next teir rather than paying to submit books in standard or economy and end up paying more than I needed to. If a book does come back with better grade an consequently should have been submitted in a higher teir based on the value, CGC will call and tell you that you owe them more money. So I don't think they care tha much either, since they are still getting right amount of money and actually have more time to get the book completed.

Now, If you sent in 30 ASM #14s in VF, I would expect you will get a call before they actually graded them.

Great idea. I will be submitting 30 books via value tier next week and will do the same.

Been a while since I sent books in but did a few months ago. Nothing great - a lot of mid-grade GA books.

America's Best Comics #17 Big Apple - I had this a 7.0 so close but at least white pages :cloud9:

2275944950102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

America's Best #20

2413861680102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

America's Best #3 - low grade but finished my run of ABC

2801738740102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

America's Best #11 - A PLOD - I missed the color touch - it is miniscule but I do see it now. I've had this book for some time and I still love the cover.

2895105780102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

America's Best #31 - nice 8.0 of the last issue.

2089906890102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

Exciting #30 - ultra-rare issue. Tear seals that I still can't see.

2648080900102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

Exciting #35

2381484260102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

Exciting #7 - I really thought this one better. I didn't think the pages to be brittle but now it is a BLOD (Brittle label of doom :frustrated:)

2378685700102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

Heroic Comics #14 File Copy

2233813980102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

Heroic Comics #15 - This is the one that surprised me the most - Bought here on the boards as a higher grade (7.0) which I agreed with the grading but CGC thought otherwise :boo:

2663441700102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

Startling #11 - Maybe the best of the bunch - I think the highest graded.

2871832590102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

Startling #27 - White Pages :cloud9:

2987423450102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

Startling #35 - Great cover

2761169580102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

Startling #39

2589880950102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

Thrilling #34 - Another PLOD :frustrated: Cover cleaned and reinforced. I cannot tell it is cleaned and missed the reinforcement but another I have had for some time. It does at least have nice page quality.

2077137270102488065S600x600Q85.jpg

Wonder Comics #4

:hail: Man, what a sweet run of Batmans!

How come the #245 got a green label but the signed #251 didn't?

They don't (CGC) recognize sigs unless they are witnessed actually by a CGC official , and treat it as "writing on the cover" , ....or somthin like that ................. :P.... :P

crappy explanation hooks :P

They probably thought the 245 was a 9.0 expect for a major defect.
