The winner needs to step away from the crack pipe.

How about the underbidder. :o

Four bidders at $1,500. (hive mind) :gossip:

If this keeps up...you should be able to retire in no time. :applause:

Nah, that would require... selling. (shudder) (tsk)

Yeah, but it's got the coupon meh

I cut the coupon out of mine to get this POS :(

Ahaaah! you fell for the ole "cut the coupon" trick. :baiting:

Yep, but luckily I didn't fall for the old "buy one to read, buy one to keep mint and submit to CGC in the future for a 9.8grade and sell it to pay for your entire valiant collection and then some" trick. I'm not stupid, you know! :makepoint:

Another book moves beyond the reach of average collectors. Wonderful.

Do average collectors really need a CGC 9.8 copy?

More to the point, is that 9.8 copy really better than thousands of other copies out there which are almost certainly just as nice. I guarantee there is nothing remotely unique about that book. Only the label, which treats this -- one of many hundreds or even thousands like it -- as if it's scarce.

Sell your valiants????

Dear God, no. Where would you ever find any to replace them?

(That is, without a computer, a phone, or leaving your house. Or calling out the window to random people who pass by...)

Ahhh, the voice of... sarcasm.

Over the past 18 months, there have been 87 copies of Harbinger #1 graded by CGC.

2 have been 9.8.

That's 2.3%. Before that (pre-2006), 10 copies were graded 9.8 out of 200 slabbed. 5%.

So, as I'm looking out the window for passers-by with Harbinger #1,

I should expect that 1 in 44 copies of Harbinger #1 is a 9.8. If I'm lucky.

Harbinger #1 sells for $50 raw, so I'll buy 44 copies for $2,200... and cross my fingers.

Then again, copies that aren't "slab-worthy" aren't being submitted (or they are pre-screened)...

they're not on the census at all... and the rate is probably closer to 1 in 100.

100 copies, $50 each... $5,000... before slabbing fees... and a hope and a dream.

That's all that's needed. Well, that and people outside the window with Harbinger #1.

How many do you have?

Must admit that's a pretty remarkable price for that book. Out of curiousity, what is the printing defect that's common to Harbinger #1?

The cover is a paper that splits at the spine... top, bottom, around the staples, you name it.

I think Cry For Dawn #1 often has a similar problem... probably a few other books, too.
