Scanning these books I came across what looked like someone put tape across the staples on the cover, but no residue or anything that would prove there was so I started to look through it and what someone did was put scotch tape on the staples. It looks like the staples were sticking up some so they did it to avoid the staples causing damage. The tape isn't stuck to the pages at all. Just wrapped around the staples and folded over.

I wonder how the person who did it managed to slide the tape under the staple?

not sure but there is 2 pieces of tape first one goes under the other one is wrapped the other way around that first piece of tape.

I saw an OO collection of pristine books.

Guy had the forsight to buy the most pristine copies off the stand, and store them in perfect conditions to keep them minty fresh.

 

However...

On the outside of the spine, he put a small piece of scotch tape on each staple.

Thousands of mint books, but every single one had tape on the staples.
