Post your surgeon covers here!

27 posts in this topic

Okay, CGC does not recognize this attribute like they do "Bondage Cover" or "injury to eye panel" or "X-men crossover." But surgeons are HUGE in popular culture today, starring in shows such as ER, Gray's Anatomy, House, Scrubs, Chicago Hope- I am probably missing some. And some board members may have had a positive experience with a friendly, neighborhood surgeon. So here are my collection of surgeon covers, in somewhat of a chronological order. Please post your own- I would love to see them!

This first one was the first surgeon cover I purchased; I bought it from my LCS when I re-entered this crazy hobby a little over a year ago.

Spirit Section March 9, 1947

The evil villain actually faints during the operation, with The Spirit scrubbing in and donating his own blood to save the day!

This next cover is from Educational Comics, Max Gaines, editor. Of course, the company would change hands (and name and content) after Gaines' untimely death in a boating accident, and his son Bill would drop out of school, "temporarily" putting aside his dream of becoming a high school chemistry teacher so he could put the company in order prior to selling it.

This cover is my favorite. After he took over Education Comics, EC became known as Entertaining Comics, and with the collaboration with Al Feldstein and the rest of the EC artists and writers, the storytelling and artwork blossomed. The Senate investigations (SOTI) pretty much forced Bill Gaines to abandon his New Trend comics (except for Mad,) he developed the New Directions line. Although one could argue they are more tasteful (certainly more PC) than the New Trend line, the stories and artwork in M.D. still maintained the high EC quality.

M.D. #1, May 1955.

Thank you to ComicParadox who sold me this beautiful Gaines File Copy! To see some panels from the excellent story about diagnosing and treating appendicitis, click here.

Wasn't that cover swiped (or maybe its splash) for the splash of Dr Strange #169?

Anyhoo, here's a couple. World Around Us, last issue, Kirby art:

M.D. 2 - 5, 1955. I still don't understand why the series lasted only five issues (one more than Psychoanalysis.) Although some don't feature surgeons, they all have the surgeon at the scrub sink on the side.

These next few are just corny mostly love stories- I think Charltons- from 1963. A far cry from the EC's of the previous decade. You gotta love the young intern running to the near fatal crash victim with his doctor's bag in hand. Wonder what he will pull out of the bag to save the day (and get the nurse) ...

Well the Marvel patient is at least going to get anesthesia...

The DC guy looks like he's going to experience the operation awake! :o
