What I did a few years back sounded kind of expensive but it gave me tremendous piece of mind. Take all the pieces of art and sandwich between masonite (agree with Terry completely!) and then sent the package via FedEx to arrive at my hotel the same day that I did. It was completely covered by my CIA insurance for loss or damage and I didn't have to worry about bringing it onto an oversold or packed plane.
