PREACHER / SDCC report (update!)

22 posts in this topic

PREACHER was one of the very few bright spots of the 90's for me. For a while, it was the only monthly book I was picking up. Been hunting for a while for some prime examples and was happy to land these two in one deal:

PREACHER #1, p. 17 (Cassidy intro!)

PREACHER #5, p.8

I'm looking for more. Write me if you have any to trade/sell. Thanks!

Another year, another SDCC. Great hanging out with friends and meeting new faces. Prices continue to go up, but stuff is coming out of the woodwork as a result. Saw a lot of nice SA art (the stuff everyone's been talking about, the prime Ditkos and Kirbys) that I hadn't seen in previous cons. It wasn't just the same stuff being shown again with increasingly higher price tags...this was stuff being brought out because values are currently so high. Can we assume this is the right time to sell? I don't follow the high-end market closely enough to know. But it's always cool to see some truly great, historic art.

My first stop at the show is always at Eric Powell's booth. It's hit/miss as to whether or not Eric will bring art to cons...EXCEPT for San Diego. He always has the most stuff for sale at SD. I had a wantlist for myself and some friends and was hoping to score at least a few of them. Unfortunately, I was beaten to the punch by a well-known collector/dealer. When I got to Eric's table, said collector/dealer had a six inch stack of art getting tallied up. All pages from GOON and Eric's run on ACTION COMICS. He tried to haggle, but Eric wouldn't lower the price. When he walked away, Eric offered to let me look through the stack. Most impressive. When the collector/dealer saw me, he decided better and came back to close the deal. I've since found out that they will be available for resale soon (at a markup, of course). So sort of "good news/bad news" for those who were looking for their pages, I guess.

In the aftermath, I did manage to get a couple of pages for friends. I also got this one for myself, a nice gag page:

Once of my top wants has always been a Dave Stevens ROCKETEER example. When this was made available, I had to get it:

I've really come to enjoy the fun and energy Cliff Chiang brings to his art, so I thought he'd be a good fit for a ROCKETEER/BETTIE commission. He didn't disappoint-- it's one of my favorite commissions ever. I set this up at NYCC and picked it up at SD:

Dave Johnson is one of my favorite cover artists. He was reluctant to follow in Dave Stevens' footsteps, but I'm glad he took the challenge:

I missed out on Lee Bermejo at NYCC, but thanks to my pal Cheeky Joe, got this at SD:

It was very cool to see my commission published in Michael Golden's new sketchbook. It was even cooler to get this sketch in my copy:

I missed out on Dave McKean when he was in SD two years ago. I probably would have struck out again if it wasn't for my friend John Butler (thanks John, I owe you one!):

My wife loved the David Petersen sketch I got at NYCC, so I got another one at SD. David's fun take on Indiana Jones:

I've known Art Adams for years, but never took the opportunity to get anything from him. I've been kicking myself for a while now. Art has finally taken pity and we have set up a deal (thanks Art!). I asked for this sketch and when I asked him "how much", he simply waved his hand. Too nice. This will more than tide me over in the meantime:

That's it for this year! Already looking forward to '09...

Nice Goon Pages as well. I have no scans but I got the page where Labrazio reaches out of the water to choke the seer. I also bought the cover To the Mighty Marvel Western w/Red Wolf which I think is fantastic.

How are Eric's prices?

I am curious about pricing too. Does he have a website where he sells his OA...or is it the Mignola approach where he only sells at certain comic cons ?

I think Nexus (Felix?) knows better than I but they seemed reasonable, between $250- $800 per page. I did not get to see all the pages for sale as three portfolios of material had already sold before I got to his table! I am not sure if he sells his Goon covers as there were none there by the time I arrived.

Thanks all!

Re: Powell art...I've been following his art closely the past three years. He only sells at CERTAIN shows. He has done many shows where he doesn't bring any art at all. He brings the most to SDCC. At other shows, if he has art, it's fairly minimal. Even at NYCC, he only had one portfolio (and it wasn't even full, at that).

Prices ranged anywhere from $150 (non-character pages) to $1500 (for full-page splashes and other "great" pages). Covers were more. That's the same as last year. The main difference was that he had so much more art this year for sale. Last year, he had two portfolios. This year, he brought at least five.

The vast majority of the art was bought by one collector/dealer before the show started. As I understand it, the plan is to sell it in September. I question how successful that will be, though...the Powell market, while clearly enthusiastic, is still relatively small. Eric knows his market value well at this point and priced everything accordingly. I don't know how much more mark-up can be added. Also, if just one or two of the serious collectors don't bite, that will make re-sale all the more difficult. We'll see.

There was one GOON cover, but no Goon on it. It was $2K iirc. There were other covers available, like FREDDY VS. JASON VS. ASH as well as some Marvel Western covers.

He doesn't sketch.

That's all that comes to mind right now, pm me if there are any more questions.

LUCKY DOG! Those are great! I have been on the hunt for a nice Preacher page for a while....hopefully I can find one at Baltimore.

Albert Moy broke up the complete #53 issue for SDCC. There should be at least several pages left. I thought the prices were very fair (around $250-300 for panel pages). I don't know if he does Baltimore, but if he does, grab them early!

I have to ask - how much did that McKean Death page set you back? It is just stunning!

It was at his current standard commission rate: $800. I actually wanted a Batman or Joker, but McKean doesn't like doing those characters for whatever reason. So I went with the default, something from SANDMAN. A friend of mine had been trying unsuccessfully to get Joker for years. This time, he offered more than the standard commission rate and got his Joker.

Meanwhile, this guy got this for FREE:

I had seen McKean at the booth but didn't want to bug him. doh! This collector simply asked for a sketch and McKean obliged. Lesson learned.

Felix,

Nice PREACHER pages. Those early pages (first 12 or so) have alot more detail/shading than the later books.

Did you get them from Moy?

And thanks for the update on issue #53. I looked at it last year when it was still for sale as a complete book, but I didn't want to wipe out my entire SDCC money in one go, on preview night no less.

Mike
