I think I may have some sort of explanation for this.

 

Back in the 1960's, DC editor Julius Schwartz remarked that,

"Everytime we stick a gorilla on the cover it sells twice as much."

or something to that effect. Hence all the gorillas in the DC universe.

Kids like gorillas, chimpanzees and monkeys.

It's a attempt at marketing to the kids.
