Definitive Copper List

11 posts in this topic

There are 11,976 different comics that have been graded by CGC

which are dated between 1980 and 1992. Copper Age means different things

to different people, so some might have the age start later or end earlier...

and not every comic has been CGC graded, but 11,976 different ones have.

If you want a list of those 11,976 comics, here you go.

1980/81 to 1990. :sumo:

I really don't think it's a coincidence that new comic book eras start and end with each new decade, as everyone re-evaluates the previous 10 years and feels like "starting something new" when a new decade rolls around - I know I do and I can't imagine comic creators are any different.

1960 - B&B 28-29, Justice League 1

1961 - Fantastic Four 1,

1970- Conan 1/GL-GA 76

1980 - New Teen Titans 1

1981 - Pacific Indies, Miller/Byrne get DD/FF, etc.

1990 - Spider-man 1, variants, retailer edition, mass speculation

2000- Ultimate Spider-man, start of Ultimate Universe

This is hardly a coincidence.

There are actually three "booms" for comics in the 1990 timeframe.

1988, 1990, and 1992... each stands out for something "booming" about that particular year,

leading to more CGC submissions, especially compared to the years in between.

1987 - 767 issues : 12,697 Total Submissions

1988 - 817 issues : 22,985 Total Submissions

1989 - 804 issues : 14,433 Total Submissions

1990 - 799 issues : 16,732 Total Submissions

1991 - 844 issues : 14,481 Total Submissions

1992 - 1,062 issues : 20,763 Total Submissions

1993 - 1,415 issues : 17,891 Total Submissions

I'm all for using the decades, though... it is much easier to discuss with new collectors,

and even the long-term collectors don't have any problem understanding "Decades As Ages"...

though I'm sure they'd still argue that something happened in 1981 that should count as 1970s.

1960s a.k.a. Silver Age

1970s a.k.a. Bronze Age

1980s a.k.a. Copper Age

1990 is a good "stopping point", and 2000 is a very good place to split out another age.

I am not trying to make some definitive claim, but I've been collecting/buying/observing comics straight from 1984 to now, and I've noticed only a few quantum shifts in all those years:

1985: B&W Indies gain momentum, going crazy in 1987

1990: Spider-man 1 hits the comic shops and totally changes the market overnight, leading to "artists as rock stars", variant covers, retailer editions, and in the end, Image.

2000: Ultimate Spider-man arrives to both adulation and derision, but quickly changes to an outright "Ultimate Universe" phenomenon about 5-6 issues in.
