2008/09 GRADING CONTEST : Round 9

138 posts in this topic

Yikes...that OSPG thingy specifically states in 8.0 Very Fine "No Rust Migration" ... :frustrated:

NOTE: Certain defects are allowed if other defects are not present.

gotta stop reading that thing... doh!

No, just might wanna read it in it's whole....and see the book in the same.

Which begs the question...Why mention the rust if it didn't affect the grade???... :(

Did it affect the grade or did it not? (shrug)

Got you too, eh

It's a clean game. By a wicked man.............. :luhv:

I figured it as a solid 9.2 WITHOUT the rust...then I dinged it down to an 8.5 due to the combo of CROW pages and rust.....close but no cigar :P

This was exactly my rationale as well . . . :hi:

:gossip: And of course, we were right . . . it's just that Sarasota got it wrong

Must be a bad-azz book in hand :sumo:

Noone cares about your rationale :baiting:

there was rust? :insane:

Yea, it brought the grade down to a 9.0......

It was the big hoggin stress that brought it down to 9.0.

The rust brought it down to 7.0. :frustrated:

Do you guys even bother to read what I posted about the book (shrug)

COW pages Round ends Friday night, same old same.

:news::: Note : Lower portion of the bottom staple has a tiny bit of rust and same size spot has migrated to the centerfold.

Good Luck suckas

(thumbs u

doh!

Once again

" believe the book was a solid NM- without the rust. Seeing as the rust was a portion of the bottom staple it was not viewed as severe.

I have made the mistake in the past of sending a book that was a solid NM but failed to catch the rusty staples, which were very severe, only to have it come back as a 7.5

I felt if I did not mention the defect, it would not be right as I stated from the start that I would mention any defect not seen on the scan.

Some people over adjusted their grade on the book way too much, and some accordingly based on the info I provided. "

Or you can continue playing with your coloring skills :makepoint:

Timmay plays with himself a lot. :gossip:

Thought it was a 9.0, but gave it 7.5 b/c of the rust migration.

That was my thinking as well...

Would have just dropped it to an 8.0, but after looking in OSGG I saw minor migration was not allowed in VF, only up to 7.5....

Guess CGC doesn't knock off anything for minor rust migration (shrug)

Can't see that book being higher than 9.0 rust or not.....

I know any of us in a sensible way are looking for our usual references, OSPG being the first for most including myself...but it is pretty common knowledge that CGC does not grade EXACTLY per OSPG, in fact, they are contrary on various aspects...grading ultimately is like golf, ya gotta learn the rules, practice, practice, practice and then it's all muscle-memory baby... 2c

:makepoint: CGC has nothing to do with Overstreet. Period. They use their own standards, which they don't divulge. The only way you'd be able to anticipate how they handle rust is to have experience with books that had rust and were submitted to CGC.

I have no idea how they treat rust because I don't submit books to them. But judging from how they graded this one they dinged the grade a little for the slight rust and migration, but not much.
