I wonder if this is the final example of DC whimsical style of cover?

You could be right. I always liked the cover of 327 with the sandwhich and milk, but it does have a kryptonite scene going on.

 

I have been looking for a nice 297 for awhile. Like you, I love these covers:

that's a great story in the Detective

 

Detective Comics #298 follows on the DC tradition of reintroducing GA villains for the SA.
