I remember in the post-punk era there were many bands like Hot Chip, doing off-the-wall, slightly outre, dancey stuff like that - some had commercial success, many didn't, and have since been forgotten about. Not that HC are bad (in fact they're one of the few decent indie acts out there at the moment), just that back in the late 70s / early 80s the bar was higher.

I used to like bands like I Start Counting and other weird Mute and Factory bands - Hot Chip remind me of them

Yep, those two labels were always coming out with off-the-wall product that still managed to be accessible.
