The Desert Wind Challenge Thread

It was meant to be a joke. Even if one were to ask Steve such a silly question, he'd probably slam the door in the person's face, since it smacks of commercialism among what he calls "the unearned"-- which is why he is distancing himself from giving autographs and/or artwork in the first place.

You are correct that there is no SS book with Ditko's signature. Now if only CGC would loosen up the rules and allow retro-signature witnessing...for instance, say a CGC witness were to take my signed copy to Ditko and ask him, did you sign this? and if he says yes, then allow it to become an SS book... Food for thought. lol

(tsk)

If they did this, the hobby's faith in the label could would be shaken.

Rockman2008, Ditko and his views on commercialism are existentialistic..seriously..it's all entertainment..if you think about it, painting, drawing, acting..they are all skills for someone else than yourself to enjoy..I love Ditko but..really..why go against the grain..why bite the hand that feeds you.. why repel your true disciples, your only fans..I mean..it's NOT fine art dude.. it's a COMIC book.. to entertain kids....

A Ditko SS book is like a big joke to me now.. ..

Can't argue with you. While his work isn't great fine art, it is great pop art (at least Ditko's early stuff). He ought to enjoy the commerce and celebrity it entails, rather than treating it as a curse. But you gotta love him. The more he drives fans away, the more people want to see him.

DESERT WIND COMICS OFFICIAL RESPONSE.

I like some of the challanges that have been put out there. But please note that due to several projects and future signings that I will be working on after we return from MegaCon I will not be able to accept or respond to any of these challanges until the beginning of May. So keep thinking them up guys. And thanks for the thought that has gone into some of these ideas.

Here's a recap of all the ones I've seen in the thread up until now (it's been a little slow in the sig room for the past few days). By the end, a few got to be less like challenges and more like ideas waiting to become challenges, but they're in there anyway.

Remember, this thread is open to anyone who wants to participate. It's name was just inspired by the Desertwind/thecollector challenge that Chandler won. Some of these don't require you to be a witness and this could be fun, so at the very least, we can put out more ideas. Especially with the Summer movies starting up and a new Deadpool movie announced there are definitely more challenges to be had.

THE CHALLENGE:

Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst on my ASM 500 5 sign book

IF IT GETS DONE:

Cash, Choice of OA in my collection. Something to be determined by Chandler

IF IT DOESN'T GET DONE:

One free Witnessing

THE CHALLENGE:

Ditko on my Hulk #6

IF IT GETS DONE:

1K

IF IT DOESN'T GET DONE:

Chandler has to sing, "I'm a little teapot" on youtube.

OK Here is a challenge

Jackson. This must be done by Signature series guidelines and must be done within one year.

IF IT GETS DONE: I will kiss you @ss again

IF IT DOESN"T GET DONE you have to give me the HULK 340 or the IRON MAN in it's unfinished form.

Lets see you get these 15 signatures on this impossible book.

THE CHALLENGE:

The cast of Rocky Horror Picture Show (Susan Sarandon, Meat Loaf, Barry Bostwick, Richard O'Brien, Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell & Tim Curry)

Terms can be arranged.

IF IT DOESN'T GET DONE: Chandler pulls some strings and I get the picture taken with Stan Lee that's been denied to me twice already this year.

Here's a challenge for thecollector:

If you get it: I get the book. You get $500

If you don't get it: I will write a rhyme that you can rap on YouTube to compliment that horrific lip-synch job from Phoenix.

IF IT GETS DONE: I will give you $500, but I get the book of course. I also will pay for any expense that you had to go wayyyyyyyyy out of your way to get signed (i.e, going to Egypt on the set of Frank Miller's next failed movie to get a signature)

IF IT DOESN'T GET DONE: I get the uncompleted book as is (graded of course)and 5 free Stan Lee signatures, which I willl have to still pay for grading and shipping.

Get a copy of any of the first volume of Grateful Dead Comix signed by all of the remaining members of the Grateful Dead which would include Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, and any other members you feel necessary (ie Hornsby, etc)

If it gets done : I would pay $1000 cash, but I am sure Borock would spend a LOT more than that for this piece

If it doesnt get done: Ill take any of the sigs on an SS copy, and pay for the cost :)

How about an easy challenge?

The book: Birds of Prey #75 in 9.4 or better signed by Gail Simone.

Success: I'll buy you a nice lunch.

Failure: You waive the $5 signature fee on my next submission.

Deadline: How about October 28, 2009 since it's my birthday.

Daniel (Par2ch) this one's directed at you

The Challenge: Getting a Spider-man double sketch on a Dark Avengers book done by Steve McNiven and Gabriel Dell'otto, one on the front one on the back. Has to be completed within 2 years.

If it gets done: You get my Secret Invasion 9.8 signed and sketched by Paolo Rivera and signed by Stan "the man" Lee + 100$ or the cost of getting the books done, which ever is higher. And obviously i get to keep the book.

If it doesn't get done: You have to hook me up with a Spider-man Mike Zeck sketch on a Dark avenger or Fallen son AND if one of the artist has sketched on the book i get the book.

THE CHALLENGE: To obtain David Gibbons & Alan Moore's sig on a previously graded Watchmen comic. I will provide the books (#1 is priority) each already graded at CGC 9.8. If Chandler accepts, all he has to do is hunt down Alan Moore, as I believe he has already gotten a few of my Watchmen's signed by Gibbons at NYCC already.

IF IT GETS DONE:

Just for getting Alan Moore's sig and submitting it for SS will gain you $100 (each book)

For each copy signed by Alan Moore that comes back a 9.8? $400 additional (This might be a little low but imagine getting a few signed. Also this shouldn't be too hard as the books are already graded at 9.8)

For each copy signed by Alan Moore that comes back a 9.6? $250 additional

ALAN MOORE's sig HAS to be obtain within 12 months. Gibbons can wait as his is much easier to obtain.

DAVID GIBBON's sig can be discussed later as the main focus is Moore. But I will throw in a handsome reward if whoever can get both Moore and Gibbon's sig on the book and keep the grade.

IF IT DOESN'T GET DONE:

How about 5 free submissions?

Great thread idea.

Apologies in advance for the tame challenge, but as much as I would like for this challenge to be met, I really don't want to dress up as a girl and I REALLY don't want to kiss anyone's arse! (not that there's anything wrong with that)

My challenge: Jerry Robinson SS with a small Joker sketch on my raw G/VG Batman #11 within 6 months from the time my challenge is accepted.

If it gets done with sig & small sketch: $250 plus the cost to slab it as SS.

If it gets done with sig only: $100 plus the cost to slab it as SS.

If it doesn't get done: You ship my comic back to me (insured) at your cost and I thank you for having tried.

I'm somewhat new to the whole SS thing, so please let me know if this is unreasonable...

Being a huge LOTR fan...

Challenge: Get the sigs from the actors of the LOTR trilogy that played the "9 Companions" to sign the official movie guide!

If it gets done: I will pay for the cost of the book with all the sigs + an extra $400

If it does not get done: I get the book (after grading & SS'ed) with whatever sigs are on the book for free

Here's a new one:

THE CHALLENGE: get the two copies of Star Wars #107 I have for my daughters already signed by Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, David Prowse, Peter Mayhew and Mark Hamill (thanks to Joel Elad for the last one), signed by Harrison Ford, George Lucas, James Earl Jones, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker and Frank Oz.

IF IT GETS DONE: Chandler knows that I will make it worth his while. Each signature is considered a "success." This is really six challenges rolled into one.

IF IT DOESN'T GET DONE: I'm into positive reinforcement instead of negative consequences. The monetary reward is enough to give Chandler incentive.

I guess I'm easy to please. I would like Steven Tyler and Joe Perry on a Shadowman #19, but that's more of a pipe dream than a challenge from what I hear about Tyler and autographs......

THE CHALLENGE: Take a brand new copy of the Hulk 100 project Hardcover. Each page shows a different cover done by a different artist. You must get each artist who participated to sign the page containing their contribution as well as an inside cover (front or back). Pick a show to start this challenge, but it must be done by the end of that show the following year.

IF IT GETS DONE: I'll buy lunch for two (Sharon and Chandler or whoever decides to take this one on...doesn't need to be a witness) for each day you're at the show and I'll hand over a graded copy of my favorite modern Hulk Cover, World War Hulk #1 Aspen variant (not much, but it's Hulk-related). I keep the book.

IF IT DOESN'T GET DONE: I keep the uncompleted book. Since it's a Hero Initiative book, you donate $20 for every signature you fail to get to the Hero Initiative.

Remember, this doesn't have to be left for Chandler. Technically, it doesn't even have to be a witness. Anyone who frequents shows should be able to get this one done pretty easily.

For all witnesses

The Challenge:Set up a private( unlimited number of books) signing with Todd Mcfarlane

If it gets Done:Everyone is Happy and You will be named 2009 Witness of the year

If it dosen't get done: NO EXCUSES --JUST GET IT DONE!! :foryou:

Here I have a challenge for your silly thread Palmer.......

I am having a private signing with James Watson. The Scientist who first discovered DNA. He will be signing a few Y the Last Man #1's for me.

My Challenge- Find a scientist/inventor more significant than this guy and get him to sign a comic book or magazine.

Your Reward-

I will obviously give you one of the few books from my private signing for free.

My Reward- I get to participate in your signing.

Oh and it has to be CGC SS Yellow label.

Here's an interesting one:

Gen 13 #1 Cover L (Picto-Fiction Cover) signed by Sofia Dominguez (the cover model)

(shrug)

OK, Chandler. I have a fun one for both of us. I have a near complete run of Wolverine 1-189 plus annuals and variants (see my sig line). How about we team up and get them ALL signed by June 30, 2010? I'll either pay your fees or we can donate it to a charity.

I would prefer to donate to a charity - a buddy of mine does a fund raiser for cystic fibrosis research and I am also a supporter of HERO - and maybe partner with CGC to get some publicity for the fundraising.

Steve

What would be cool is a Showcase #43 signed by Sean Connery. :D Probably never happen though.

There's already been 1 completed. Kris said he had a lead, but he never formally accepted it. I think it'd be a lot of fun to see a someone accept a challenge BEFORE he has a lock on it. Otherwise, where's the fun? (shrug) Besides, it'd give spectators something to root for! :headbang:

I've amended the terms to my challenge regarding the Angelina Jolie kiss and since it hasn't been accepted, I'm going to change them again. After seeing the cost of First Class tickets continue to go up, I'll scale it back to business class for Chandler and Sharon (or any witness and their significant other) to a show of their choosing. And remember, getting Morgan Freeman means I provide the booze for the ensuing party, James McAvoy means I provide the food, but the success of the challenge hinges on Angelina.

The reward for getting it done is pretty substantial, especially when compared to the penalty for not getting it done, which involves a phone call.

And my Hulk 100 challenge still stands and doesn't require a witness.

Hey Sean!

Looked over the challenges and noticed something was missing. What happens if someone accepts your challenge and fails? hm

Just posting this as a notice that I'll be closing my Jerry Robinson challenge (I will however be sending MutantKeys a PM shortly to see what his going rates are, since he noted in Mac Man's thread that he'll be accepting submissions for JR SS in San Diego). :)
