Walt Disney's Comics & Stories auctions from Heritage

I watched all of the bidding live, and was surprised by 2 things. The issues between #17 and #40 didn't sell for nearly as much as I thought (several issues barely sold for over guide), while the issues between #70 and #159 sold for big multiples of guide.

Here's a couple of examples:

#17 in 8.5 sold for $750 (guide is $700)

#19 in 9.4 sold for $2400 (guide is $1250). Same issue in 9.4 sold last year for $15,000.

#31 in 9.0 sold for $3750 (guide is $3900)

#31 in 6.5 sold for $750 (guide is $1400)

#32 in 8.5 sold for $1100 (guide is $1500)

#33 in 9.2 sold for $2000 (guide is $1900)

#38 in 9.6 sold for $1600 (guide is $925)

#74 in 9.4 sold for $1500 (guide is $325)

#84 in 9.4 sold for $1300 (guide is $300)

#102 in 9.4 sold for $1300 (guide is $240)

#117 in 9.2 sold for $950 (guide is $200)

#119 in 9.6 sold for $1200 (guide is $135)

Yes, it always seems that the big movers going upwards are the ones that are always mentioned over and over again in the headlines.

The ones taking a big hit downwards are quietly shunted aside or hidden deep in the back pages. :gossip:

Bonds25 .... excellent observation which I noticed also. It took awhile before the WDCS bidding heated up, right around issue #74 and then from there it just took off.

Issues earlier than 74 sold for right around Overstreet Guide. This of course was extremely suprising considering that high-grade Ducks have been going for many multiples (3x to 8x) of Guide over the last year in Heritage's weekly auctions and majority of those were later issues (100 and up).

In this auction, starting with issue 74, the prices really started to take off to their 'recent' guide multiples of 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x and up.

My thinking is that it was about (1) momentum, and (2) people didn't want to get shutout. I also suspect some prospective bidders were waiting to see what happens to the earlier books and then emotions took over.

And yes, majority of those that bidded today on the earlier issues before 74 (especially those that bidded on issues before #50) REALLY did well in terms of getting "value" in relation to guide (as those issues also book for more).

I was one of the extremely lucky ones to get three of the earlier issues

By the time the auction reached issues #78 and #79, I just stopped bidding cause I had a feeling the 'wave' of sideliners were coming in and indeed they did.

Just wish I had bid more on the other earlier issues I was either outbidded on or passed on.

I thought the 38 was a steal, as was the lower grade #31.

Yea, I was the underbidder. I was saving the rest of my chips for #41 in a 9.6 cause I just love Mickey. And I got it at a favorable price considering what the later issues went for. :headbang:

Congratulations, GAfan, MrTech, and others. It was really nice to see so many different people sharing these gems at reasonable prices. I got much more than I had hoped for, too.

:o

That's more of a case of the winner last year paying way too much than the current winner getting a good deal (although the current winner did get a very good deal).
