Did crisis do anything?

3 posts in this topic

I stopped buying comics fora long while in the 90's and may have missed a bunch of information about the current DC (and Marvel) universe. First of all the original Crisis of the Infinite Earths was created to get rid of the multi-universe. How long after the original Crisis were there new 'universes' created? Were items like Kingdom Come supposed to just be stories or take place in a 'real' Universe? Did the Crime Syndicate survive the COIE?

Also has marvel fallen into the same 'trap' of using the multi-universe to explain things at this point? With this new Exiles book there seem to be 100's of multi-universes. Has this always occurred?

Disclaimer: this is a quick, general reply that doesn't cover a lot of little things.

DC's Elseworlds stories were basically "imaginary stories" that didn't take place in continuity. Technically, since they didn't take place in the DCU, they must have taken place in alternate universes... but the DC Multiverse didn't return until Infinite Crisis.

For Marvel, the events from What If? (both series) always took place in parallel universes, but for the most part MU continuity took place in the regular universe.

At this point in time Marvel has no overall continuity (they pretend to, and anything that doesn't fit is "Magic, now STFU and stop asking questions"), so it doesn't really matter what they do so long as Joe Q. keeps getting a paycheque.
