Arcade's Comic Palooza Report from Houston.

Well Houston, TX. had it's own show of sorts this Saturday and Sunday.

It is named Comic Palooza and was located in the West Oaks Mall on the far West side of Houston. To bad I live 85 miles to the East of Houston so it was quite a drive.

Anyway here is how my trip went.

I leave town with my wife and son and arrive at the mall around 3:00 PM.

Not knowing where in the mall the show was I parked at the Macy's entrance. (Bad Idea).

The show, (I'll call it a gathering), was of course at the complete opposite end of the mall.

After much walking I came across 5 or 6 artist booths at the end of the main hallway.

One of the empty stores was serving as the area for local comic shops to sell books.

As soon as I walk inside I notice the air conditioning is broken.

This is never a good thing in Houston. (Hot, Hot, Hot.)

One of the vendors said that Friday it was freezing in the room. To bad it had to break on a busy Saturday.

Only 4 or 5 vendors had shown up. Many I suspect had canceled due to free comic book day. I was after high grade Silver Age X-Men. These were no where to be found.

One vendor had a lot of 3.0 to 5.0 issues but I have gotten to picky for that stuff now.

Almost bought a Green Lantern 76 but it was pretty beat up as well.

But the show was not a total loss. I did purchase my first piece of original art from Rodney Ramos. It is a Nightcrawler issue #10 page 5. It has a cool evil circus with killer zombies in it.

Now on to the blurry cell phone photos of the show.

This is my art purchased from Rodney Ramos.

These are the only two free comics I could find for the "Free Comic Day".

I posted this over in "events' , but I'll coattail Leon's....

I'm going to be polite, because contrary to popular opinion, I do my best

not to be a total ahole.

The show was poorly run.

My apologies to Arcade[Leon] and MrSilvestri[sam]

for not finding them. I spent almost 4 hours at the Mall, and didn't recognize

too many people. The artists alley was actually pretty nice, and I visited with

almost all of the small press and aspiring writers/artists there. Most were

happy to be there, or so it generally seemed. Humberto Ramos was due

to be there, but the Swine Flu thing in Mexico kept him home. Sorry for

that to have happened, because the crowd that was there from opening to

around 2-3ish was actually pretty nice. The artists alley gets a B- from

me.

For a very small show, there was scads of room for the dealers to set up.

And I'm told that there were 3 NO_SHOW dealers. One aforementioned

guy from Dallas brought 8-10 tables of 50cent and lowball books, some

were actually pretty nice. I snagged $50 worth of highgrade Wolvies

from a box down under a table. Guy next to me dug out a short box

of very nice Spiderman, Amazing,Spec,Web, Tales, all pretty nice shape.

Talked to the table minder from Midnight, who I think was actually the

promoter, never saw the promoter or the event staff. [ NOTE TO ANY

PROSPECTIVE PROMOTER - Have at least ONE person in charge,

maybe throw down for some bright yellow tshirts that say "event staff';

or somesuch on.

I think if I would have set up with 40 long boxes of $1 stuff, I could have

made a killing, as I do believe that the crowd in attendance would have

supported it.

There were also 5 or 6 game and toy dealers there, but not being even

remotely interested in that myself, I didn't even glance at their displays.

Wife got her nails done at a boutique just in the middle of the artists

alley, so it gave me some spare time to poke around. Found an overpriced

GSXMEN 1 and two UNCX94's that I'm going to check out again next

week.

Oh, and I ate lunch at the Arby's, since we don't have one on

my side of town and took a couple home for an evening snack.

Regulars with scads of Horssey Sauce :cloud9:
