I don't get it. Isn't that issue his origin story of how he came into "working" for Labrazio?

Incorrect. That was vol.3 #3, the Dark Horse series. This issue is the first "origin" type issue, including his circus life, the death of Aunt Kizzie, and the first appearance of Labrazio. A very important issue in the Goon canon, IMHO.
