Rare in High Grade

72 posts in this topic

Are you guys using only slabbed books as a guage as to what's rare? I dont think thats very accurate as there are most likely more raw HG books out there than slabbed. 97% of my HG books are not encapsulated -- and those that were bought CGC, were lovingly de-slabbed.

Bill

Without a doubt, the vast, vast majority of books "out there" remain unslabbed. CGC has, after all, only slabbed about 1,200,000 books. That's less than the print run for Spawn #1. There are literally hundreds of millions of comics "in the wild" that have yet to be slabbed, if ever, including a very large chunk of Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

However....since no reliable survey exists that details the copies extant en toto, it falls to the next best thing, which is the census. As mentioned before, the census can give you an idea of what is out there, and in what grades. Just like in coins and baseball cards, the census provides a general idea of what there is, even though it does not account for every existing example in every grade it exists.

After all...there are coins that are so rare, the leading minds think they've got all existing examples tallied and accounted for...then one shows up literally in the DIRT, and changes everything!

As long as everyone remembers that the census is a guide, not the final word, things will be good. :)

Well, as a person who makes his living by doing analytics and business intelligence dashboards, using only CGC books to gauge the rarity of a particular book leads to over-generalized (i.e. erroneous) conclusions...and don't get me started on GPA.

I realize that there is no standardized census for all comics (not just slabs or raw). I believe, that the only way to judge a book as being truly "rare" would be to get a consensus by those in the collector universe who spend years hunting down their grail books...and a sampling of those collectors would be US!

DC has alot of books that are just not found in HG at all.

Yeah, if we`re including DC in this conversation then it`d be easier to have a "which DCs are easy to find in HG" conversation, because most are extremely tough.

How about DC superhero keys? Relatively narrow focus. What do you DC guys think is the toughest? I know Lois Lane 1 doesn't have any graded copies above 7.5. What else?

Lots. Just off the top of my head, among keys that have no issues over 9.0, there are Action 252, Mystery in Space 53, and Showcase 17 and 22. If you make it none over 9.2, the list increases quite a bit, with issues like Adventure 260 and 300, Detective 225, etc.

I would suggest we leave ASM out of this conversation, since there isn't a single issue in the run that is considered even remotely difficult to find in high grade.

Holy :censored: you sobered up for 10 minutes :baiting:

I've never claimed that any ASMs were tough to find.

I was just busting ballz :makepoint:

I know, I'm just clarifying for the lurkers.

Unlike you and Tim, I don't love books just because they're rare. :baiting:

I love lots of books that aren't rare. I just don't collect them! :insane:

That's because they were all tossed in the garbage back in the 60's or used to line bird cages. :baiting:

Thank god for that! :cloud9:

You love to grind that axe dontcha Tim :kidaround: - but that's ok, your viewpoint on the collectible ease of ASM was the inspiration for one of my new sig lines (thumbs u

Action 242. You get a 9.0 or higher on that book, you will be able to name your own price. I would be very surprised if there IS a HG copy floating around. Dark cover, low print run, summer release, :blahblah: :blahblah: :blahblah:

DC War and Marvel Westerns from 1957-1962.

They do not exist in grades above 7-8.

(Yes, that's a generalization, kids, there are a few exceptions that make the rule.)

I seriously doubt there's a single key from that era and those genres that exists above 9.0. I will be dancing for joy if there is.

They make FF #1 and the other Marvel Superhero keys look as common as early 90's books.....

Unfortunately, there was no Edgar Church around keeping perfect copies from this era.

(And the "white cover" and "black cover" thing is a myth. ;) )

You should see forum member Adamstrange's DC war books from that era. They are sick.

....and unslabbed, as are many high grade collections of 50's / early 60's books that have never been reprinted. GOD BLESS...

Showcase 22.

Highest graded copy is a 9.0. Not many in the 7 - 8 range either.

Mark (Dizneyart) recently sold a 6.0 with OW/W pages which is probably the nicest one to surface in years. I high bid $3k on it and got laughed at !!

(And try finding a 22 with nice pages...)

Unfortunately I have sig lines turned off so I can't see what yours says!
