O T Sanner help from COMICSHEET!!!!

7 posts in this topic

(Edited - If you want to skip the web page stuff, go right to my 5th post about using the bulletin board itself to host your picture. It's quick and it's easy.)

Lets start with some basic information here.

When you said created a webpage, did you mean you have some web hosting space and you have a DNS name (ie. www.yourname.com)? If so, could you tell me the webhost company - I might know something about how their control panel works. Also need to know the address of your site, (ie.: http://www.yourname.com)

And what software (if any) did you use to create a webpage? FrontPage, a text editor, some other software, or did you get a default page from a web host company?

I just got your PM. I think your bulletin board account is not accepting PM messages. You might want to check that.

Anyway, according to comcast, you have 25 meg of storage for your website. If you keep your pictures at 75 to 200k, that should be enough for 200 to 500 pictures.

You also have some photo space which might work for posting pictures accessible from the web. That might actually be the simplest. Some photo posting services though don't give you an address that you can use to include a picture elsewhere. (I checked on this. I can't read some of the documentation without a comcast account, but I don't think this will work. I think you have to go through their photo viewing software to get the pictures.)

Let's look at the website space first. Comcast has directions on how to upload files at https://publish.comcast.net/fileutilities.html. (You can also get there by navigating the help system at http://home.comcast.net.) Unfortunately you have to be a comcast customer (have an id and password) to read the document. You will need to read the document to see how to upload a file to your site. They probably provide their own utilities for browsing and uploading files to your site.

Let's assume you have a scanned image named test.jpg. You want to upload that file so you have it accessible as:

http://home.comcast.net/~yourname/test.jpg

or, to better organize your site, I recommend sticking your images in a subfolder, example: images. Then it would go to:

http://home.comcast.net/~yourname/images/test.jpg

If you successfully get your file copied to your site, then you should be able to see it in your browser by typing in the address above:

http://home.comcast.net/~yourname/images/test.jpg

If you make it that far, PM me with the exact address of your image and I'll verify that it can be accessed elsewhere.

I'm going to read up on the photo space offered on comcast to see if that is an alternative way to post your photos.

(Edited to use a lower res picture.)

Here is an example of what a link will look like.

Please note: If you are using a Unix host, case is significant. In my address for the scan following I had to have the upper and lower case EXACTLY right for it to work. This surprised me, I didn't think it worked that way. Maybe this is a peculiarity of my web host. On a Microsoft Server I don't think this is true, I think it ignores case, but I could be wrong.

I have a scan on my picture only website at:

http://www.duckburgcomics.com/catalog/raw/SavageSwordOfConan_1_94_T2120_low_res.jpg.

To include the image directly in your post, surround that address with the image and /image commands. (I'm going to put spaces between each letter in the following example just so the board software doesn't interpret this as real commands. When you type it in yourself, don't put in the spaces.)

[ i m a g e ]http://www.duckburgcomics.com/catalog/raw/SavageSwordOfConan_1_94_T2120_low_res.jpg[ / i m a g e ]

That will look like this:

SavageSwordOfConan_1_94_T2120_low_res.jpg

The drawback to putting a big image in your post is that now all the guys with dial-up service are going @!*!!!!@ since it takes 10 to 15 seconds just for that image to load in. Higher resolution pictures are even worse. The bulletin board software suggests you keep your images below 35k for that reason. I'm going to go back in a minute and edit the previous post to show a lower res picture so it will load faster.

Now we'll look at 2 other alternatives:

1. Put a LINK to your picture rather than include the image itself. Users will have to click on the link to see the picture, but it is MUCH friendlier to dial-up users.

2. Use the attachment trick to get the bulletin board to host the picture for you. You can use either the image or the link option when you do this. The bulletin board software (I think) imposes limits to how big attachments can be. I haven't actually used this trick, but I'm going to give it a try in a minute.

Here is an example of putting a link to your image on your website (again don't include the spaces when you actually type this in.)

(Edited: Had a mistake in the sample URL. Corrected it.)

[ u r l = Savage]http://www.duckburgcomics.com/catalog/raw/SavageSwordOfConan_1_94_T2120.jpg]Savage Sword of Conan #1 (high res)[ / u r l ]

And here is what it looks like:

Savage Sword of Conan #1 (high res)

Now I'm going to try the attachment trick. First I'm going to put this post up and attach my file to it. I type this message in, then at the bottom where the 'continue' button is, I make sure that the 'I want to preview my post and/or attach a file' choice is checked.

(Edit 1)

After I click continue, I can read my post and at the bottom I can browse for a file to include as an attachment. I'm attaching my picture:

SavageSwordOfConan_1_94_T2120_low_res.jpg

You should be able to download the attachment now.

(Edit 2)

Now if I go back and read my post and click on the attachment, I see my picture. And in my browser I see the URL for the picture:

http://boards.collectors-society.com/attachments//354257-SavageSwordOfConan_1_94_T2120_low_res.jpg

Now I have the bulletin board actually hosting my picture for me! I can include the image right here by using the address above, (again putting in spaces to show the text)

As a link:

[ u r l = Savage]http://boards.collectors-society.com/attachments//354257-SavageSwordOfConan_1_94_T2120_low_res.jpg]Savage Sword of Conan #1[ / u r l ]

Which looks like this:

Savage Sword of Conan #1

Or, as an image:

[ i m a g e ]http://boards.collectors-society.com/attachments//354257-SavageSwordOfConan_1_94_T2120_low_res.jpg[ / i m a g e ]

Which looks like this:

354257-SavageSwordOfConan_1_94_T2120_low_res.jpg

One more technique. This is another way to have a small image for dial-up users, but set it up so you can click on the small picture to show the bigger picture.

This uses the [ u r l = ... command to link to the larger image coupled with the [ i m a g e ... command to show the smaller image.

The code looks like this (again remove the blanks in your code.)

Click Picture to Enlarge

[ u r l = ]http://www.duckburgcomics.com/catalog/raw/SavageSwordOfConan_1_94_T2120.jpg] [ i m a g e ]http://www.duckburgcomics.com/catalog/raw/SavageSwordOfConan_1_94_T2120_small.jpg[ / i m a g e ][ / u r l ]

Click Picture to Enlarge
