Which defects do CGC punish more?

I had a great looking ASM#63 that was a 9.4/9.6 that graded at 9.2 because of slight rust on the interior of the staples and an ink smudge on the front cover.

What's going on underneath the R in Spider-man on the FC? If that's not on the case or your scanner - it looks like a stain of some sort.

 

That's the ink smudge. It's like a thumb print.

Books do get downgraded, but they are not hit as hard as a tear or missing piece that was ripped off. It is looked at as a bindery/printing defect that books from that era exhibited.

So something like this with massive tanning/browning/shadow and oil(?) stains along the bottom (and through the entire book) would get massively hammered.

 

Does anyone know to what extent?

I would imagine it would drop at least 2 full grades because of the whole book staining alone.

 

Tanning 1 full grade, so overall, drop that puppy down to around 3.5?

 

Just a quick guess based on scans.
