What's the deal?

I love the sellers who list "non hot" items for 3-4 times market (be that GPA or what have you), and I make them an offer that is blatatantly lowball to THEIR asking price, but which is actually quite reasonable....

...and they counter offer at their asking price.

lol

It's like, why even bother HAVING a counter offer if you're not going to USE IT?

But how would you respond to an offer that was 15% off of your BIN instead of 15% of your BIN, which is what the OP said he offered the second time? Would you treat that offer with silence is the question.

My bad.

I read it as 15% of his asking price, not off his asking price. :foryou:

To answer your question, it would be automatically accepted. 85% of $14.95 is $12.70 which would be over the $10.00 minimum I specified in Turbo Lister.

He He. Now I know where to pick up some sweet books for 10 bucks each. :)

And therein lies part of my reasoning for explaining it the way I did. :baiting::whistle:

70% and 82% are certainly within the realm of reason and deserving of a response. Maybe the seller is on vacation? I've been away from a computer for long enough for offers to expire in the past. Or are we talking about David T. Alexander or someone with 15,000 items with potential best offers?

with that said, i too have ignored people who just make ridiculous lowball offers, particularly with lots of strings attached and what not (like asking for 80% off my asking price plus free insured PM shipping, etc.). i figure there's no point in negotiating with them.

I'm not saying that a best offer option on Ebay ads is a bad thing. What I am saying is that YOU should not try to squeeze every nickel out of a seller that you can. If you want the book, make a REASONABLE offer and maybe you will get a counter offer or an acceptance of your offer. But to offer 10% of the sellers stated starting price, is well, cheap and chincy.

Offer a new car dealer $4,000.00 for a car with the sticker price of $22,000.00

See how that works for ya. I bet you do not get a counter offer. Just a laugh or smile. Or more likely, a frown and roll of the eyes, accompanied with a walk away by the salesman.

The difference here, being a reasonable offer and a rediculous offer.

P.S. Just because something is listed, does not mean that the seller is interested in selling it quickly or soon. There are threads here about books that have been for sale on Ebay for a very long time.

Well, for what it's worth, I rarely make an offer less than 50%--I want negotiations to start, not stall out. That said, starting at 50% esp. if the book is overpriced is more than reasonable (because let's face it, sellers will try to squeeze as much as the buyers will ;) ).

And the car I'm driving now was purchased for $19k even which is what I wanted to pay (after all taxes fees, etc as well) despite it being listed at $25k with taxes and fees on top of that. It just depends on 1. how motivated the seller is and 2. how willing the buyer is to walk away from the deal and be okay doing so. Nothing lost if you don't ask ;)

To the OP, however, it sounds like the seller of the listing is wasting people's time by providing a Best Offer option and NOT accepting offers that are perfectly reasonable. Let's face it--asking for 15% off the top isn't much at all. At least you (Conditionfreak) have your listings set up to accommodate relatively decent price breaks on the BIN (which is exactly how a BO listing should work).

The guy is selling three items, total. Maybe he is on vacation. (shrug)

I sent the seller a message a few days ago and received the following reply:

Hi,

I do apologize for not responding. During this time of year it is real hectic for us, we attend 3 conventions in 4 weeks, San Diego comic Con, a little local show, then Wizard Chicago, a total of 6500 miles of driving in 4 weeks. We just came home yesterday.

Along the way we had a MAJOR THEFT! The truck and trailer were stolen with $500,000 worth of CGC GRADED BOOKS, COMIC BOOKS, TRADE PAPERBACKS, STATUES, and MORE. The police and FBI are working on this.

As far as [the book you inquired about] it will take me several days to get organized and I will get back to you. Send contact info.

Thanks,

This has to be a worst case scenario for a dealer.

I sometimes sell my art items on Ebay and people make me totally ridiculous offers on them. So I completely ignored offers for $10 or $20. Some of my items will get silly or very low offers up until the day the auction ends and then I get a buy it now with only two hours left.

The art work is time intensive and costs money for my supplies. I won't sell an item it took 60 hours of work + supplies to make for $40.

I did have a book listed for $1200. It was worth that much, but I really needed a quick batch of cash. I waited and went through offers and counter offers with someone till they got up to just under half of the asking price.

Yes I took a hit on it. I could've waited it out and got more. That being said, I myself bought the item at a yard sale for .50. So getting almost $600 for it was excellent. The money was badly needed.
