Ebay Question..

12 posts in this topic

Does anyone know if eBay has been selling their member's emails to other companies? I've been downtrodden with spam mails the past couple months, and I have no idea where it's from b/c that email is SOLELY for eBay..I guess I wouldn't put it past them, esp now that they're doing this pop-up bs.

blush.gif Yeah, I get these stupid viagra spam emails sometimes 2 or more times a day. I'm 27 years old, I have no need or desire for viagra. shocked.gif

Here is my theory # 1 about the spamming you are receiving. You have done business with an eBay seller that has sold your email address/information to some company.

Or theory # 2, you pissed off (better than being pissed on) an eBay seller that is also an @$$hole, and they have taken it upon theirselves to make sure you get a daily dose of spam.

What a waste of time frown.gif

I keep a record of all my dealings on eBay for tax purposes: contact info, email address, etc. I have yet to be offerred money for that kind of info. What company buys info like this and at what price? I know there spammers that sell these lists for mega marketing techniques, but I've not received the resiprocal equivalent: an offer to buy info I've collected? Just curious.

I think you have to go out and try to sell it to a company. Also, I'd be careful if you do..b/c if other ppl are like me they have 1 account for eBay and such and they will be able to tell if they suddenly get spam after dealing with someone frown.gif

Then don't worry; unless they are seeking me out and wiling to plop down a couple of bucks per name, I wouldn't see it being worth my time to do so. Everyone can change their email if they and I receive about 3-6 spams a day from ebay sellers of comics and another 30 for other internet junk. Use a spam filter would be my best advice. Paypal sells your info, ebay, acc to their privacy policy shares info with all affiliates, like half.com, squaretrade (which is the 2nd biggest joke next to safeharbor, or safeharbour for the canuckians), all the verification affiliates...etc...so ebay itself sells you out the moment you sign on.

I have yet another theory # 3: Could it be that you have "Spyware" installed on your computer? Some programs come with "baggage" that reports "home". There is a free tool available to remove such pests it's called "Ad-aware", I've used it from time to time, and it works. My final theory # 4: If you use the email account referenced to in this thread EXCLUSIVLY for eBay, and ALWAYS have, then you are exempt from this one, but could it be a web site or program that you have given your email address to for registration?

Man....I hate spam email. The ones I keep getting are for those stupid little tiny radio controlled cars. Best thing to do is just to change the email address you use for eBay, etc. every few months and try to stay one step ahead of them. That can be a pain however.
