Question about Signature Series grades...

Hey guys.. so here's my question. I just received a sweet SS CGC 8.5 IM 128 (signed and sketched by Bob Layton) from jonjesper. The book looks nicer than an 8.5. I noticed that Bob Clayton actually did the sketch in a ball point pen, and the sketch really pressed in a bit to the cover. Would CGC deduct for this, or is the grade assessed before the signature/sketch is done?
