Is there a price guide for British comics?

Several boardies from the UK said they didn't think 2000A.D. was worth collecting. It's a bit like collecting the comic strips in your daily paper.

I think 2000A.D. had some of the best comics ever written.

Oh, and as far as I know, there is no price guide.

Ouch! I still scan ebay for upgrades for my 1-100 run! I love early 2000AD. Everything up to about issue 500.

I have a few editions of the 'UK Comic Book Price Guide' at home, published in the early 90s. Not sure how long it kept going, but I have editions 4 to 6.

The big money in UK comics is golden age. I'm quietly confident however that early 2000AD is on the up. In fact, it definitely has been for the last few years. I suspect it will continue to do so as it has been undervalued for a loooong time.

Say, He11blazer, do you have the early ones with the free giveaways, spinners, tattoos, etc.? I know they're super rare and go for a much higher price.

Sometime I'd like to find a Scream #1 with the plastic fangs...

I don't have the Space Spinner from #1, or the Biotronic Stickers from #2, no. Nor the 'survival wallet' from #3 come to that, but it's those first two that really matter.

For now I'm content without them. They add a lot to the price and I'm not reaaaally interested myself! £50 for a nice 1st app of Dredd, or £250 for a nice 1st app of Dredd + a sheet of stickers... hm

Maybe one day :)

How difficult is it to find copies of 2000A.D. Diceman these days? I searched forever for #5 and probably paid way too much for it. (Being on the wrong side of the pond didn't help, either!)

Anway, it's bound to be reprinted now that I finally got a full set...

Hi all

There is absolutely a price guide for British Comics.

It was written by Duncan MacAlpine and ran for I think about 8 years, the last one being published in 1997. While the prices are out of date, you can extrapolate up and the info is extremely comprehensive.

Earlier versions were published in the 1970s too by Alan Austin.

Duncan also runs an ebay shop and has been discussed on therse boards before. Not always nicely, I would add.

There is a well established fan-base for British Comics - it's just not as commercially or grade driven as US ones.

I grew up with 2000AD and have paid well, and will pay well, for untouched super-high grade copies. (e.g. I have several white-paged pre-100 issues that would genuinely grade 9.6+).

The problem is 98%+ copies out there are in the FN grade or below and most have newsagents marks.

It isn't just the first 50 that are collectable either. Certain issues below 300 can be worth £20 plus; the free gift ones, key character debuts etc. e.g. the no.s 224-226, the 2nd Bolland Judge Death serial.

However, many later copies are indeed next to worthless. I could've bought about 400 issues in the 800+ range for a £1 on ebay last week. Very little interest.

In other areas, Beano and Dandy are very popular from the Golden Age.

As is Eagle and the Gerry Anderson comics from the 1950s....

As, of course, are the Len Miller Marvelman comics which to be honest are getting ever hotter as more and more Miracleman collectors make the leap (with Marvel's purchase of the character etc). I paid £80 for a lovely NM Marvelman Family Annual recently - and many copies will bid up £20-£30.

UK OA also sells extremely well....

Finally, the other area I specialise in apart from Miracleman is UK comic fanzines - there's a growing market ou there which I've helped to develop. The amount of rare high quality stuff out there is amazing.

I sold Alan Moore's 1970 writing debut in Seminar no.2 for £325 last year.

Finally, here's a London mart tomorrow!

Too much beer not enough comics methinks!

Wow, thanks for all the great info! I'll definitely look out for a copy of that guide. Knowing that the prices are 10+ years out of date it will still be helpful in identifying any "key" type issues as well as other nice-to-know info about different issues like artist and author.

As ever, Earl has all the serious info on the UK scene!

Been a while since I looked at that. The prices for #1 and #2 are spot on, bearing in mind they mostly turn up in VG/F or worse. Price for #3 is rather underestimated, and they're still grossly underpricing 71-72 and 77-78. They all go for a £10-£20 in VG/F, and they all have 'banned' contents.

I'll happily buy as many #3, 71-72 and 77-78 as anyone has at straight guide (going by that guide).

It's nice to see some annotations on the list :)
