Sketch Commission Price Guide

Where did you get that price. Rob did a nice bust shot for much less.

"Commissions: Headshots go for $100, and price goes up per complexity."

In artist lingo, Sketches and Commissions are two very different things and usually carry different prices.

Sketches are done more quickly, usually at a convention table with more simple tools.

A Commission is usually done in their studio, carries more detail and time and is completed using every tool at their disposal in a more stable setting and without the interruptions of a convention.

well rob was interreputed a few times while he was doing the piece for me but. He had a art bag with many pencils pens erasers ect. He didn't chince out on the amount of time he put in or the type of media toold he used. Now true it was on a sketch cover but it was still very awesome.

Public price guides for show sketches strike me as a bit tacky. I'm totally willing to share what I know, but I'd prefer to do it via PM.

Artists change their rates from show to show and depending on what's going on with them. So while you can have an idea of their price to gauge, you really just have to prepare to spend the appropriate amount of money for what you want.

Mike Choi has gone up and is doing sketches for 60 now. I think he was trying to pay for his wedding or something (shrug)

yea they all vary but its nice to see what your getting into, some artists are just more high end then others

That is very true Arjuna...... man I hate your signature line. And looks like you changed it again...you should um...let go some of those books.

or could always do what i've been doing....work out a max price getting you the sketch, if the artist is to busy, or goes over that price

give a list of back up artist/chacters.....send an amount of money, and if you owe more....pay it

i say 150 max, but send 100 if they say i owe more, i get it to them ASAP

but make sure the person your dealing with is willing to cover you with their money, until you pay them back

or even sigs, i did it with NY Comics...he told me i owed money i got it out to him the next day

The other thing to keep in mind is that, if an artist agrees to do a session at the Hero Initiative or CBLDF table, the sketch rate may be much different. I know at HERO, we ask the artist what a fair rate is for them, since we don't want to conflict with their normal sketch/commissions, but they always seem to fix upon a price that's less than their normal rate, I guess to give some fans a chance at a nice sketch at a lower rate. (or because they spend less time on the sketches or something)

Definitely have backup artists in mind when you're on a budget. :)
