They are a larger version of baseball card top loaders...

firm plastic. Not Mylar/Melinex.

You talking about Turtle Shells (hard plastic on 3 sides, front/back "face" are like 4-mil Mylar, open at the top)? I'm not sure they're even made anymore...

No, they are hard plastic on all sides and open on the top for comic book insertion.

You can buy different sizes from modern to silver to golden age. The ones I pruchased were silver age size.
